MacBook Air battery is draining faster after the Sequoia update

After updating my MacBook Air to macOS Sequoia, I’ve noticed a significant drop in battery performance. Previously, my MacBook could last more than 5 hours on a full charge, but now it struggles to hold more than 3 hours. Additionally, there are other performance issues I’ve noticed since the update, including Battery and MacBook Air general performance and so much lagging

Could you please advise on how I can fix these issues and restore my battery’s previous performance? I would appreciate any troubleshooting steps or guidance you can provide.

Thank you for your support.

May be some incompatible service is causing the issue. I had the same issue with my M1 Macbook air after the Sequoia update. For me, it was an old (not fully compatible with the latest OS I guess) web cam utility that was causing the issue. Uninstalled it and looks like it's back to normal.

Open Activity Monitor > Energy Tab. Sort by Energy Impact.

Stop/Uninstall the one that's impacting (highest number) the most.

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

I had the same issue, when streaming a church service, the battery would drain even though the Mac is attached to the power adapter, and never had this problem before the upgrade to Sequoia. That was version 15.0 of Sequoia. I updated to the latest/greatest 15.1 and the problem has resolved. The battery stays fully charged while streaming.

Try that first before worrying about battery health, third party power hogs, etc. If things were fine before going to Sequoia they should remain fine, now that we're beyond a dot-zero version.

Hi Folks, I was having the same issue. After checking with a friend who has the exact same new Mac Air (bounght within a week of each other) who was having zero issues with battery life, I ran MacPaw Clean My Mac process and discovered that the update had caused an App to open at start up and run in the background. I uninstalled the App and things seem back to normal. There were also several other settings that had been returned to default that were potentially impacting performance. I am sure there are other ways to figure out what might be running in the background but it was a free trial of Clean My Mac and simplest for me. Hope this helpful to some on you.

It is. I just did that, as announced earlier.

  1. I'll tell you if the draining rate has improved after the downgrade (in a few days), confirming or not that Sequoia is a battery drain
  2. downgrading will only work if you do a fresh reinstall, using a bootable device loaded with Sonoma install app.
  3. If you try using a Time Machine, you'll get an error message telling, in substance: "impossible to downgrade from this version [Sequoia]". The Time Machine will only allow you to restore your apps and date.

The procedure takes some time and manipulations - backing up, erasing and reformatting your hard disk, downloading Sonoma installer from the App Store (free), retrieving your wifi password (wifi is required to register your machine again), apple account password and machine password - but otherwise simple and uneventful.

I'm having the same issue.  13" Macbook Air M1, 2021, 78 battery cycles, 94% health. I updated to sequoia about a week ago and then to the 15.2 betterversion. I still didn't notice any issues until today when I was watching a video on safari (iplayer, about an hour long). The battery drained from 75% to 35% during that hour which is absolutely insane. The macbook also got quite hot.    I checked in Activity Monitor under "Energy Impact" in the Energy section and messages was off the chart > 2000. I closed messages, opened again and it's again off the charts for energy consumption, with CPU also very high (105), even though it doesn't seem to be doing anything. it's possible it's downloading message history as there's quite a lot there though so maybe that's it, but I would have thought that wouldn't take longer than an hour.

> Just did some more investigating, looks like it only does this when I have messages app open and set on a particular person's message history window. I'm not sure why. anyone have any ideas?

The same issue on my MBP 13" Intel 2018. Battery level drops by 2% every 15 min. Ventura doesn't have such an issue. The issue appears on clean Mac OS Sequoia installation thus it is not 3rd party problem. I have reset SMC and PRAM also. Nothing changed.

So this is the situation:

  1. Sequoia 15.1 drains the battery
  2. Sequoia 15.2 preview does not address this fundamental issue, pushing "intelligence" related features instead (more drainage ahead)
  3. Apple does not even seem to acknowledge the issue

Sorry, I need battery life more than "intelligence".

"Downgrading" to Sonoma now. In fact I'll call it an upgrade. I'll further use sequoia on the other, desktop Mac (which is on AC all the time) and see if and when Apple comes to sense.
