Calculator App Issues in iOS 18

Is anyone at Apple addressing the issues with the iOS 18 calculator app on iPhone? Pressing equal after entering an equation and solving at once doesn’t allow you to calculate again without retyping everything. I use the calculator multiple times a week as a counter at work and losing this functionality is incredibly impactful.

I’ve also found that the calculator will move to scientific notation in the six figure range in vertical mode. This seems excessive, considering the old calculator would display millions without switching to scientific notation. I’m really confused why these “features” were added to the new calculator as opposed to leaving actual working features from before.

Quite literally the most pointless change to what was a decent working calculator - it is now utterly unuseable. It’s like a child’s speak and spell.

Once more pointless and unnecessary changes ruining a once great app.

why change it if it worked? It’s like it was designed by someone who never actually uses a calculator. 😡

Absolutely hate this new calculator. Use it to balance my bank statement. It was so easy to use before. Am I going to have to go out and buy a basic calculator when I have this beautiful iPhone 14 Pro Max? Help! 😡

I absolutely hate the new utilities calculator after the update. Why can’t I add my numbers and see the numbers go up without hitting the =sign?

For example, if I add 365 + 563, it doesn’t show a total anywhere unless I press the =.

I will be searching for a new basic calculator. Why change something that had no issues Whatsoever?????

After adding numbers and getting a seven-digit result - say, 1,234,567 - and copying that result in Calculator, if I then paste it into Notes or Messages, it pastes as 1.23457e6. This has never happened before, and I can find no way to make it paste as a seven-digit number. Very frustrating.

iOS18 phone update has destroyed the calculator. It can’t actually be used unless I guess one is 5years old. Tough if you make a wrong entry, can’t even hit ‘equal’ to end the run without individually reversing each number on display! Ginormous numerals feels like writing an essay and impossible to think quickly. 👎👎👎👎👎👎

Yes yes yes. Did they hand over calculator design to a math-anxious second grader? My very first pocket calculator (which cost me $59 in 1980 dollars!!) had more functions and a more usable interface than this. At the very least, it should have:

-option to display calculations as we go, like an adding machine tape, for checking back on a sequence of operations

-suddenly need to press = EVERY TIME when adding a column of numbers

-changing to scientific notation without user request to do so

lame, lame, lame. Anyone who uses a calculator would know better. Hey, did AI design it??

now I have to go find my 3d party app I deleted, all excited, when Apple announced there would be a calculator in iPadOS 18 😠

I absolutely HATE the new calculator on iOS 18. It is unusable. As many others have said before, the calculator is only useful if you are 7 or younger. This is the worst thing Apple has ever done. The only way Apple can save themselves is if they give back the functionality of the original version of Calculator for those who are over the age of seven. I will not use this Calculator ever again unless it is fixed and most likely I will delete this app from my phone if possible because it is so absolutely, utterly useless. I guess I’ll have to get an app that calculates at the adult level.

I agree totally. I hate this change. I have to retype the entire equation every time. I wanted to enter $1000 and see what would happen if I got 12% interest over 40 years. Before, I only had to hit the enter button 40 times. Now I have to retype the entire calculation each time. Why fix something that’s not broken? This is not better at all. It’s actually worse.

Please can someone at Apple please add this functionality back to the calculator app, this is something I use very regularly, for compounding over months or years as part of my job.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Meanwhile, you may want to take a look at the third-party PCalc. It's not free but it is very highly regarded.
