Calculator App Issues in iOS 18

Is anyone at Apple addressing the issues with the iOS 18 calculator app on iPhone? Pressing equal after entering an equation and solving at once doesn’t allow you to calculate again without retyping everything. I use the calculator multiple times a week as a counter at work and losing this functionality is incredibly impactful.

I’ve also found that the calculator will move to scientific notation in the six figure range in vertical mode. This seems excessive, considering the old calculator would display millions without switching to scientific notation. I’m really confused why these “features” were added to the new calculator as opposed to leaving actual working features from before.

Just downloaded PCalc, per this recommendation, since it’s an app you have to pay for, I bought it(as I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for pretty much anything(like some of the third party calculators want) a one time purchase was a good option. At first I freaked out because the equal wouldn’t repeat the operation, but luckily, it’s just a setting in its gear menu, and now I once again have a functional calculator. I think it’s ridiculous that apple would throw away basic functionality, but at least I can have a useable calculator now. Thanks Idris!

the more I dig into PCalcs features the more awesome it seems. When you click the 42 button (awesome reference) it has mathematical constants for all sorts of fields. Like it’s fully functional for my purposes, but I can also just geek out with it for awhile too, and figure out things I have no direct need to for fun 😀

I’m really unhappy with the calculator too. The previous version gave a subtotal as you entered your calculations now it doesn’t so it’s absolutely no use to me. Do you think they might change it back 🤔

No one here in this user-to-user forum knows Apple's plans for the future. Nor does Apple read here for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Meanwhile, you might want to look for a calculator app that better meets your needs. The App Store has lots. PCalc seems to be recommended by a lot of people.

Why is it when you do an upgrade (iOS 18.1.1) that’s for security issue you mess with everything else? I.e. calculator, calendar and photos to name a few!!!

No one participating in this forum messed with anything. You can let Apple know your thoughts here:

Also, iOS 18.1.1 didn't bring any changes that I'm aware of to Photos, Calendar or Calculator. All of the major changes were made with the release of iOS 18.0.

You might consider spending some time learning how to use Photos. It's actually quite customizable.

If you don't like the current calculator, try a third party calculator. PCalc gets good reviews by forum members. You can also find hundreds of third-party calendars, one of which might better meet your needs. I like Fantastical. Week Cal has lots of great features.

We need answers here: what specific user data/feedback/IP considerations led you to disallow users from “using the calculator to keep hitting the equals sign to calculate compounding interest”?

And you won't get them here. And probably not at all. This is a user-to-user forum. Apple doesn't read here for feedback or suggestions. And they certainly don't respond here to questions about "why" the company did something.

Apple,
Please go back to the original function. I use this every day to keep track of my bank transactions. Having to hit = every time I calculate an equations is time consuming and costly should you forget. Why did you install this change?! What was the benefit?!

Meanwhile, you may want to try one of the hundreds of other calculator apps available in the App Store. PCalc is frequently recommended by there are lots of others as well.

Actually, I don’t believe that anybody can find ANY Grievances or Gripes about the Pre-iOS 18 calculator (that would be iOS 17 and below calculator) … The only place I hear of there ever having been any iOS 17 calculator
Gripes are only located RIGHT-HERE on this forum (the Calculator App Issues in iOS 18 forum).

Well, whether you believe it or not I personally have seen a steady stream of gripes about the iOS calculator RIGHT-HERE over a period of years. And people who didn’t like it were told to let Apple know by sending feedback; apparently enough of them did so Apple changed it.

So – WHERE are those HUGE numbers of users with iOS 17 calculator Gripes?  Why can nobody Google them and find them?  I think “they never existed”.

As you seem to have only been in the forum for a few days (or maybe even a few hours), how would you know what users said before you joined?

If someone really wants the Apple CEO to get involved, then do a Google search for the name and mailing address of the CEO and lets FLOOD him with old-fashion USPS mail.  I’ll bet that he can get it fixed.  I actually tried to post his name/address, but the orators of this forum Censored it -- for me trying to publish his address.
SO – LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF (it ain't hard) and start the letters till the iOS 18 Calculator is “fixed”
back to its iOS 17 state. AMEN

Actually, here is the place to suggest something to Apple→Product Feedback - Apple

No need to do a search for Apple’s address; it is right on Apple’s website→Contact - How to Contact Us - Apple

Feel free to write to CEO Tim Cook (apparently you didn’t know his name); his address is

Tim Cook

Apple

One Apple Park Way

Cupertino, CA 95014

Although with the state of USPS the chances of any mail getting anywhere is iffy at best. Maybe calling is better.

For many (if not most) financial users, the HP-12C, originally released in 1981(!) is still being manufactured, and is still considered the best programmable financial calculator ever made. I have 3 of them in different locations around the house, and also one on my iPhone. Fortunately, there are several HP-12C emulators in the App Store, many with additional features than the original HP-12C had. It is far more powerful than the built in Apple Calculator.

I absolutely hate the new utilities calculator after the update. Why can’t I add my numbers and see the numbers go up without hitting the =sign?
For example, if I add 365 + 563, it doesn’t show a total anywhere unless I press the =.
I will be searching for a new basic calculator. Why change something that had no issues Whatsoever?????

I love the fact that I can see all of the recent entries, rather than the last entry disappearing. Makes it much easier to spot errors...

But for your use let me suggest one of the several emulations of the HP-12C programmable calculator, probably the best calculator ever made. Originally released in 1981, so now 43 years and still in production. You will see one on every accountant’s desk to this day.
