Mac sound output system defaults to my monitor, which has no speakers

I've been trying to get my Mac mini M1 to deliver bluetooth audio to some speakers, without a lot of success. so it's not helpful that the Mac Audio out setting defaults to my Dell AW2430DW monitor, which in this case doesn't have any speakers at all, let alone bluetooth ones. Is there any way to edit the list of sound output devices, so that I can dispose of the monitor and one or two other gizmos, such as Game Room, whatever that is?

Mac mini, macOS 15.0

Your monitor may not have speakers but have a an audio out connection. Mine does.

You can't remove it from the list of sound output options, but you can select other options.

The Mini itself has a tiny tinny speaker.

You can only select the Bluetooth speakers if they are connected to your mac.

Did you pair the speakers with your mac?

What happens when you try to connect them?

You have Symantec/Norton stuff that is utter **** and should be completely uninstalled.

Not only it is useless from a security perspective, it has been crashing left, right and center - presumably causing all the problems at hand. I have seen may Etrecheck reports but never had seen a piece of software that has crashed 1854 times in just a few days...

Thank you for the link.

I think that you did a great diagnostic of the situation, and indeed some interference from one of the connected devices or cables seems to be very likely at play.

I don't have a Mac Mini, and have only used Bluetooth speakers with Mac laptops (of different vintages), without issue. The closest to a Mini is a Mac Studio in the office, but that only uses Bluetooth for the Apple keyboard, without issues (of course, the keyboard sits on the desktop, right next to the Mac).

I took away everything that could get in the way between the speaker, one that I know to work well, and the computer. The two are now about four inches apart. Then I removed everything that I could on the Mac to a position below it, so that all that's left is the Mac and maybe 5-8 inches of cables coming out, then passing through a hole to a shelf below the table. Then I flipped the Mac mini over so that the bt antenna is face up, unobstructed, on top of the Mac, and switched on the speaker. The speaker showed up by name in my Mac bluetooth settings, so I clicked on “connect”.  I then turned on the speaker, went to iTunes on the Mac, and started playing  “Don't Cry For Me, Argentina”.  It came on the speaker, lasted about a minute and a half, then went dead. Period. I checked on Settings/bluetooth; it was still, supposedly, connected. So am I missing something here?  “Connect” is enough to “pair” speaker and computer, right?  It seems to me that this should work. It doesn’t. Can it ever, or is this the best I can expect from a 2020 M1 Mac Mini?   BTW, thanks, Luis, for the comments. You convinced me of the importance of getting as much out of the way of the computer/speaker connection as I could. I think you are right, but there's still something going wrong.

You know, I've been using Macs since about 1990, but enough changes have been made when I wasn't looking so that now I can generate an Etrecheck report without any trouble, AND make it appear on the desktop without any trouble, but since it is now impossible to display more than one working application on the Mac screen at a time, such as Apple Mail AND Etrecheck Pro, I have no idea how to drag the report into here, or of posting it any other way, like as "additional text". Nope. It doesn't have a URL, either. Any suggestions?

Not so.

Sounds like you've turned on Stage Manager, which is designed to help you focus on a single app, diminishing other apps.

It's not for everyone. Just use System Settings to turn it off (search for it, since the specific setting varies by OS version)

I would stop using a mac if I could only use one application at a time!

As Camelot said, this is just a setting that you can change.

System Settings->Desktop & Dock, turn OFF "Stage Manager".

OK, I just ran the GetNortonOutOfYourMac app, or whatever it's called. I still can't dispose of NortonSafeWebPlus, supposedly because it still has extension in use. How do I get rid of those?

BTW, I also disconnected the antenna on the underside of the Mac, and plugged in an Avantree Oasis C bluetooth transmitter, started everything up and turned on "Roads to Moscow" in iTunes. The results were considerably better than any time I've tried using the Mac's antenna. There are still breaks, but the audio is good. With the Mac antenna, I would get a max of about two minutes, then nada. Silence. And yes, I used the correct micro-tools to disconnect the Mac antenna. So if I can get rid of all the Norton extensions and sub-applications, maybe there won't be any breaks at all. One can hope.

To get rid of something that runs in the background, you may need to do it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables all third party extensions and daemons, and only runs essential system services.

It is intriguing how you can alleviate symptoms with this kind of "surgery". It suggests that indeed the reception of the built-in antenna is not that great. I don't have a Mini to compare.
