So, I "preordered" on 9/16/24 just for them to tell me I won't even receive the device until 10/11/24? WTF is the point of the preorder to begin with. I preordered to get the device as soon as possible!!!

When you preorder you join a queue of other people who preordered.
If you don’t manage to get your preorder in within the first few minutes, you go further back in the queue.
If you ordered a model, color, storage space version that was really popular you are in a larger queue.
If you don’t want to wait for your order, check availability at your local store. If it’s available, buy it and cancel your order.

You are getting the iPhone as soon as possible. Right now new orders in the US are quoting delivery times the last week in October or later. It's just that a lot of people got their pre-orders in before you did.
