Getting Error Message Trying to Open Word Docs

In my documents folder, I found a bunch of Word files that I cannot open. I get this message:

Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

I tried all of those suggestions (No issues with permissions, I have sufficient memory, and trying to open it in text recovery didn't work).

These are all .doc files, if that helps.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Are these very old Word documents? If they are old enough (from the 1990s) the latest Office programs sometimes cannot open them.

If this is the case, as suggested by Yer_Man, Microsoft may have a suggestion (or someone in their Forum may have one). Alternatively, you can try various alternatives to MS-Word, such as Apple's own Pages, or various others like OpenOffice or LibreOffice or others may succeed in opening the files. Once they have opened, they can usually be saved in a Word-compatible format so you can continue with Word.

The best place for assistance with 3rd party apps is at the makers of those apps, so I'd try post this on the Microsoft forums.
