The keyboard on my new MacBook Pro is different from my old iMac. The Grave key isn't the one next to the key [!1]. I need to find it to do a slip edit a clip independently without slipping its connected clip in Final Cut Pro.

It may be at the bottom left corner of your keyboard but you are not giving us any information… a picture of the keyboard maybe? Or open the keyboard viewer on your screen and post a screenshot.

He could mean that Luis. Slip the contents of primary clip but not have the B-roll with it.
In the Final Cut Pro menu select Command Sets/Customize. Search in the Command Editor for Override Connections. Drag the function into some other key or keyboard combination or maybe to the same key in its new location Whatever works for you.
As Tom said, the key is there next to Z.
I switched my keyboard layout to British, and the grave key works perfectly fine in FCP.
It’s British, and as you can see, grave is next to Z. Does it not work when you press that key?

What is printed on that key instead? Apple makes a couple dozen different keyboards, you need to tell us which one you have. If British, grave will be next to Z.
Also tell us what you have on the list at system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > all input sources.
Right, the Grave key is next to Z. However, the slip edit doesn't work with the Grave key + Trim tool. It works fine without it but changes the position of the connected clip. I am using the Final Cut Pro version 10.8.1. They might have changed it, because it used to work with version 10.4.3.
Slip edit and trim tool? Maybe it’s a terminology problem, but this is not what the grave key is supposed to do. What it is is to able to move a clip while temporarily disabling the connections so connected clips do not move with it.
I will rephrase it. When I move (slip) the contents of a clip in the primary storyline using the trim tool, the connected clip moves with it. However, I want to move the contents of the clip in the primary storyline but not the connected clip. I used to be able to do that by pushing the Grave key, but not anymore. When I push the Grave key, its icon changes but the clip in the primary storyline doesn't move.

Sorry if this is obvious, but is there extra media in that clip? If not then there is nothing to slip.
FWIW, I have tried this (Trim tool, hold down grave) with the British layout, and it is working just as expected.
FYI, British Apple laptop keyboards are different the US. Here's a photo. And I have confirmed with a friend in Manchester it works.

That commonly happens when the shortcut key is not where the application expects. Is the Command Editor to try to reassign the shortcut to another key.
