I have duplicate app icons on my iPhone screen. I do not know what has caused this, but I do not want duplicate app icons. This takes up room, & is very annoying! I want to know how to remove ONLY ONE of the duplicate app icons, without removing any data at all. Repeat- I want to remove ONLY THE DUPLICATE APP ICON (1), not both app icons, & I do not want to remove any app data.

Reset the Home Screen Layout:
If apps are in there twice, then you can reset the Home Screen Layout. You'd have to add back all the apps that you can recall being back on there. So, take some screenshots of your Home Screens to have something to refer to, when adding them back.
Are you saying you have more than one icon for an app on your Home Screen(s) or that you have one on the Home Screen and one in the App Library?
Every app will appear in the App Library. You can't remove them from there without deleting them entirely.
I just had this same problem on my iPad Mini. What solved the problem was a factory reset; however, when I set my device back-up, I did not sign into my Apple ID until the device was fully set-up and activated, and I also checked for updates before signing into my ID. Once I signed back into my ID, the duplicate apps were gone.
On Nov 5th, I downloaded 18 and 18.1, but when I checked for updates immediately following the factory reset, it showed that 18.1 needed to downloaded. So I think there was an issue with the 2nd update I downloaded on November 5th that caused the duplicate apps.
