Merging Two External Hard Drives On Mac Using Disk Utility

How can I merge two partitions on an external hard drive? One partition is empty, the other contains my Time-Machine backup. I can't figure out how in Disk Utility - the partition button is greyed out.

I recreated this post because it was put up on Apple here and never received an answer. After about 20 minutes of hunting around I found the solution and wanted to post it for people experiencing the same issue as I was.

I had an older Ex-HD with Time Machine as a partition. I wanted to re-format it for a new purpose, but couldn't update/remove the partition.

If you open Disk Utility (this is where I was stuck), and click on "View."

Then, "Show All Devices."

This will add a level above the Ex-HD partitions. It's the device. Select that and hit "Erase" now.

It's ask you to format the whole drive however you like.

"GUID" for Intel Macs. "Master Boot Record" and "ExFAT" if you need it to play nice with Windows.

Hope this helps!
