What causes TimeMachine backups to fail on NAS devices?

The newest fun part: with the latest update the network connections with enabled Firewall are stable, but if you backup your Mac with TimeMachine to a NAS device, the backup is no longer working. Stops between 200 and 400MB.

To be clear, it is not the apple OS firewall that was the problem for me. it was the external firewall (mcAfee, Sophos, etc). For me, I updated my Sophos firewall to the latest version and the problem went away. Sophos had a blurb about this on their support site. try updating your external firewall (not the definitions but the actual program) and see if that fixes it for you. I am now using 15.0.1 TimeMachine with no issues. Have done 5 backups perfectly.

What worked for me. FYI: I'm using a WD MyCloud device - I know...it's old, but it still works. And M1 Max. Sequoia 15.1.1.

What I tried:

Disabling firewall

Resetting SMB connections

Removing and re-adding Time Machine drive (my WD MyCloud device) and using existing backup.

What worked:

Removing and re-adding Time Machine drive (my WD MyCloud device) and creating a new backup.

My physical FW is independent of Mac OS - it's a physical device. It's still the same issue in Sequoia 15.0.1 -> turning on Mac OS firewall breaks TimeMachine backup to a NAS. It's really horrible.

I always rely on a two-stage FW: physical device and Mac OS, never trust a single source. I currently just need to remember to turn on Mac OS FW starting a business trip to be safe in hotels and public networks.

In MacOS 15.1 is more broken in Time Machine for use with NAS

When removing and adding back the NAS to the Time Machine devices:

  1. Time Machine shows you all folders even though they are not designated Time Machine folders - it shows all folders that are currently connected to the Mac, whether or not marked as Time Machine folder.
  2. the dialogue, where one is supposed to enter the logon data of the credentials of the NAS cannot be edited. It is prefilled with the user of the MacOS, but you can enter only one letter from the password. At least you can add credentials that you have saved in passwords, but if you haven´t saved it in passwords, you cannot enter anything.

Currently only backups to external hard drive continue to work.

Error message: "The network disk disconnected from your Mac while backing up"

  • With Synology NAS is no backup is possible,
  • backup old Time Machine settings fails (running in the same setup since 2018),
  • switching off firewall no longer works.
