How can I resolve Apple Account association issues on my iPhone?

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 18.0.01

The full warning which I just got when updating to iOS 18.0.1 is:

This Device is Already Associated With an Apple Account

If you turn on Automatic Downloads with your Apple Account, you cannot auto-download or download past purchases with a different Apple Account for 90 days.

The choices are: [Cancel] or [Transfer]

I purchased my iPhone from a friend who is "Apple knowledgeable" and he swears he went through all the steps Apple recommends before selling the iPhone to me but to me this alert would seem to indicate that the iPhone is in some way still associated with his Apple Account and I have no idea what to do or whether to click on [Cancel] or [Transfer]. Assuming [Transfer] would transfer the iPhone to my Apple Account, this would seem to be the appropriate choice but I welcome advice as to whether that is the correct choice.

Many thanks for any assistance.

He needs to go through the process again as the device is still attached to his Apple ID.

I'm having the same issue. I bought my iPhone11 through a company called BackMarket. I'll never make the same mistake again.

It's clear that any wiping protocols they're using, whether correctly or incorrectly, do not work. The message pops up frequently, and I'm wondering if the prior owner has access to my iCloud. BackMarket support has been very unhelpful.

First, Backmarket told me there was no such issue. When I uploaded a screenshot, their next reply was that I would have to "prove" that this is not an Apple issue. They asked me to check Settings to see if my iCloud name showed up and it did. Now what?

Whether it's an Apple issue or not, no company should be in the business of reselling devices that are still linked to the prior owner.

I'm wondering, how can the device be FULLY unlinked from the prior owner's account?

Sorry, I missed to read your excellent post kpttnuts.

Somehow I failed to realize the defaulted ”Rank” sorting of thread posts on this forum. Sorry Apple, but this ”Rank” post sorting effectively removes all kinds of logic and chronology to any solution… gah! And a lot of people, like me, will likely fail to read the latest post before putting questions ;-) …

Now I have removed Apple Music and re-installed it from App Store. Crossing my fingers!

I have a 13 Mini with iOS 18 and the same dialog issue. I purchased this phone 2 months ago at a well renowned iPhone refurbishing company. The dialog message described above keeps coming like once every 2 or 3 days, and clicking ”cancel” or ”transfer” makes no difference.

Since this phone was sold via a refurbishing service, there is no way for me to contact any previous owner to ”de-associate” the iPhone from their Apple account (heard this would be a working solution to some people otherwise). Will the dialog message keep bugging me forever, or will it stop after 90 days?

Im currently at iOS 18.5. I’ve had no changes to my apple account on this device. I’ve already called apple support for this same thing too. They had no answers. I had to do a factory reset of my iPad and it still pops up multiple times an hour no matter if I click transfer or cancel. Today it’s been sending me to the App Store when I click transfer but the App Store says page cannot be found. It’s driving me insane!!!!
