How can I resolve Apple Account association issues on my iPhone?

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 18.0.01

The full warning which I just got when updating to iOS 18.0.1 is:

This Device is Already Associated With an Apple Account

If you turn on Automatic Downloads with your Apple Account, you cannot auto-download or download past purchases with a different Apple Account for 90 days.

The choices are: [Cancel] or [Transfer]

I purchased my iPhone from a friend who is "Apple knowledgeable" and he swears he went through all the steps Apple recommends before selling the iPhone to me but to me this alert would seem to indicate that the iPhone is in some way still associated with his Apple Account and I have no idea what to do or whether to click on [Cancel] or [Transfer]. Assuming [Transfer] would transfer the iPhone to my Apple Account, this would seem to be the appropriate choice but I welcome advice as to whether that is the correct choice.

Many thanks for any assistance.

He needs to go through the process again as the device is still attached to his Apple ID.

Devices can only be associated with a different Apple ID once every 90 days. The seller probably had changed the Apple ID previously and now you would need to wait. They should be ably to tell you how many days are left before they are able to remove the iPhone from their Associated Devices. Not sure if the Transfer option will immediately let you use the device or not.

I recently had this issue on a used iPhone … I had tried everything I could find on internet searches but couldn’t resolve the issue. I was able to get the phone replaced as the store I got it from hadn’t seen the issue before, and didn’t know how to fix it. My phone was under warranty so it was replaced with another used iPhone of the same model. After installing various backups to the replacement iPhone I had the exact same issue…after lots of effort I finally got rid of the issue. Delete “Apple music” app and reinstall it. I haven’t had the issue since. I was getting the warning daily before and every time I had power cycled the phone, now the issue is gone. I had to set up my music again but that was no pain compared to the pain of the daily warning.

Hope that helps others and the Apple support team!

After a couple of months of getting this alert I bit the bullet & reset my iPad - NOT a complete erasing, but a resetting of the six things on the Reset list.

The downside is I lost all the stored passwords for the six or eight Wi-Fi routers I use (businesses and friends’ homes as well as my own) and the desktop got reorganized - minor hassles all in all, but I haven’t gotten the alert since I did the deed a few days ago. (I was previously seeing it every few minutes.)

Someone said you might get relief from deleting apps whose log-in you share with someone else, but I deleted those I thought might apply and it didn’t help.

IT'S STOPPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok guys, this has been the most annoying bug EVER! It started on my iphone 11 just before Christmas and would plague me every time I turned my phone on and another bonus couple of time per week too. It's hard to explain to anyone who doesn't receive the message just how annoying it is.

So i tried three things and the last (easiest one!) worked!!

First off I upgraded my phone to an Iphone 14 Pro - and the message was still there!!! My language was blue - I have either been unlucky twice or the bug followed me!!

Second, I deleted all apps that someone in my house had too - YouTube, school apps etc - no difference.

Last, I RESET MY PHONE -LAST SATURDAY AND HAVEN'T SEEN THE MESSAGE SINCE!! It was SO easy.

Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset.

Honestly, that was it! No info was lost, all Apps remained (logged in). The only thing I had to change was little things like changing my phone clock back to 24 hours and the lay out of my calendar was a tad different. The relief of not seeing that bloody message every day is fantastic. Good luck guys.

This problem has been haunting me since February when I transferred to a new iPad and gave my husband my old one. I erased all data/settings and set it up under his ID. I have been troubleshooting this problem on and off since….and the frequency definitely increased with 18.3.2. I found that when I checked my account settings for Managed Devices on my iPhone and iPad, the option wasn’t displayed. I finally tried looking at my account on my MacBook and ~~VOILA~~ there my old iPad was, listed under Manage Devices. Wanted to share this because I was frustrated with getting the error….sometimes within minutes of each other.
