deleting multiple messages at once

I have read all the comments and suggestions for deleting multiple separate messages at once. none seem to work. I can not even select multiple messages at once. the last response was in 2018 however. I am using mac OS Catalina 10.15.7

Unfortunately, in Catalina and earlier, there is no feature for selecting and simultaneously deleting multiple conversations. The best you can do is select one conversation at a time and delete it.

This changed in newer macOS versions. Now it is possible to command-select multiple conversations and delete them together, as @tbirdvet has posted.
