Older app versions through Configurator

I have an older iPad Air that I want to use in single-app mode. It is running padOS 12.5.7. I have set it up as a supervised device using Apple Configurator through my MacBook. Because it's a supervised device, I cannot download apps through the App Store on the iPad. (Right? Doesn't seem to work, anyway.)

So, in Configurator I went to Add > Apps and found the app and tried to install it. However the current version of said app does not work on the older iPad. But going through Configurator, it gives no option to use an older version of the app. Unlike the process of going through the App Store on the device.

The developer does not offer older versions through their own website. Tried that.

So … is there another method of downloading an older version of an app through Configurator for use on older devices?

You will only be able to install Apps that remain both available and compatible with the target device. Other than privately developed Apps that can be installed under a Developers licence, the only source of Apps for download is the Apple App Store.

The first generation iPad Air (a.k.a. iPad Air1) is obsolete. While some compatible commercial Apps remain available for iOS 12.x, these are becoming increasingly scarce - as many App Developers have withdrawn older versions of their Apps from the App Store. For practical purposes, many Developers tend to support the current and perhaps two or three prior major versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Alas, as iPadOS 18.x is now current - iOS 12.x is now a distant memory for some...
