I can never get a fully clear picture. Only a small portion of the photo I’m trying to take will be in focus while the rest is blurry. I’ve turned macro lens on and off testing if that’s the issue, but it doesn’t change the problem. It’s been like this since I got it on 9/24.

I've read through the entire discussion and seen plenty of professional evidence, yet it seems like you keep missing the point. We're not talking about taking pictures from a distance but about the issue of blurry photos at close range, without using macro. It looks like you might be trolling, given all the evidence here that points to a serious problem for the brand.
It's quite ironic, you keep telling people to read the whole post, but it seems you haven't grasped the main issue yourself. We are dealing with blurred images up close, not photos of turtles from 10 meters away. Still, I'll lay out the steps to replicate the issue on iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max for you, since your iPhone possibly has the same problem, though you might not realize it:
You seem to have a misunderstanding of how cameras work, despite trying to educate others on the topic. I tested seven iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max models at the store, and all had this issue, unlike older models that produced clear images. So please, stop posting misleading information here. Your interpretation of these discussions just underscores your lack of understanding.
I suggest others ignore this user (Jeff Donald). He's just filling the thread with unnecessary comments and not helping at all. He didn't perform any tests, appears to have missed the main point despite numerous posts with in-depth evidence, and PROBABLY HASN'T READ THE ENTIRE POST, yet he's still trying to teach others. I doubt this guy even has the right iPhone.
You’re photographing non-flat subjects. Lens tests at close distances are always photographed using flat subjects. Those tests show nothing, sorry.
You need to all report this to Apple! Seems they are doing nothing about it!
spoke to Apple support today and they are useless. So get the feedback to Apple!
Please post an example or two showing the blur. My 16 Pro Max takes excellent photos.
Or just trade it in full stop!
contact apple support and see how quick they get rid of you, the acknowledged they are fully aware of the issue but nothing is being done to fix it

Guys, this is an optical error, simple field curvature, poor quality for close objects.
The shutter speed has also become longer indoors, which causes more blur.
I’ve done that. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change anything. It will move the focus elsewhere but the rest of the picture is still really blurry (In regular photo mode, not portrait).
When taking photos with my iPhone 12, the whole photo would be in focus.
I am having the same issue. If I take a photo of two people, the focus is only on one or the other. And if I take a photo of one person, only either the clothes are focused or a small area of their face, but not the whole person.
Has anyone found what the issue is?
keep in mind that it’s happening since iPhone 14 and they have done nothing to fix it!!!! My banking app requires me to take a picture of my left hand to pretty much enable a “digital token” and be able to make online transactions and here I am using my banking app from my XR 🙄🙄 all they say is “reach the developer of the third party app” but it literally happens with almost every third party app? Do we have to reach out to all of them? Wouldn’t it be easy that Apple actually just fix it themselves since it’s only a “one fits all” solution???
I am having the same issue, not sure if it was like this the first 2 weeks I got it, but now it is and it is driving me crazy. Even the front camera sometimes takes a few seconds to focus. Does anyone know if Apple will fix it?
I have similar issue, with the zooming out the camera struggle to focus. My iPhone 14 it is more stable with the focus. It seems with the 16 is getting worst in performance. I will try to return mine, I am very disappointed.
I am having the same problem. I did not take the pic in the portrait mode. Rather it was taken using a regular 1x Fusion Camera f1.4 and 24mm lens. And yet, it focused more on the person close to the cam while blurring out the background. Shifted from 15pro to 16pro to have a better canera. Yet it turned out to be a worse choice.
I bought iPhone 16pro max 1 week ago. Really worst camera quality front and back. Blurriness I couldn't take clear photos. I expected a lot from iPhone. I ll not suggest anyone to buy this. Waste of money. I really disappointed.
Hey Mate, this is the best i could do with the photo, I had to shrink it so to be honest it looks worse when you have it all side by side on the phone screen but this is basically the gist of it, it iPhone 11 and 13 are extremely good, 14 is ok and 16 is terrible, but again this doesnt do it justice as i had to shrink the photo etc....(i can only upload a 5MB photo here.... like, how are we meant to even upload some solid proof when a single photo nowadays starts at 6MBs)
