Calculating and Adding Icloud Storage - Apple One Premier (w 2TB) + 6 TB Icloud+ Why Not = 8TB?

I have the apple one Premier family plan with 2TB storage (under purchasing apple ID - A). I just upgraded my Icloud + storage to 6 TB (under personal apple ID - B) for $29.99 per month. (I share both with family.)

As I understand it, this should have changed my total icloud storage to 8 TB - but it is only reflecting 6. So what happens to the "free" 2TB that come with the Apple One Premier Subscription? It doesn't make sense to me that I am now paying $37.95 p/m for services and no storage + an additional 6TB at 29.99 p/m???

The apple rep I was on the phone with thought it should also be 8TB but when it wasn't just said, "Oh, I guess it doesn't work that way."

SHOULD IT BE 6 or 8?

IF 8, Do I have to have to change my icloud + (6TB) storage attached to ID - B to my purchasing apple ID - A and then add myself to the family plan as a member???

I don't understand why they make this so confusing - why not just add more TB to the family plan options and make it one price (vs. 2 plans and 2 prices per month).

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

UPDATE: After several hours with support, we figured this out and it's a crazy workaround!

The resolution here was a HUGE workaround. You have to logout of your personal apple ID and login with you purchasing apple ID (the one you purchased apple one family with) to add storage to your family plan. Make sure the storage is share with all family members. Then, you logout of the purchasing ID and log back into your personal ID (or whichever one is the organizer of the family) and add the purchasing apple ID to your family (yes, it takes one of your 5 slots so I hope you don't have a lot of kids). Then, make sure in every case the family members are seeing the storage share - if not restart all the devices on the family share. This finally worked, but it is a PITA.

I assume many of us who were part of the apple universe long before family sharing have this same issue. My (now) purchasing apple ID is tied to 20 years of (now shared) music and app purchases, so I'm not willing to give those up in order to streamline the process.

Hope this helps!

You should have 8TB. See the following from What happens to your iCloud storage when you sign up for Apple One - Apple Support

If the iCloud storage included in Apple One is less than your current plan

You keep both your current iCloud+ plan and the iCloud storage in Apple One.

If you prefer to keep only the storage included in your Apple One subscription, you can downgrade or cancel your current iCloud+ plan.

Also see the following from the same support article:

After you subscribe to Apple One, you can buy more iCloud storage if you need more. With both Apple One and an iCloud+ plan, you can have up to 14TB of total iCloud storage.

The 14TB would be 2TB from Apple One and 12TB (the largest iCloud+ plan).

I wonder if I need to add my personal apple ID to the “family”? Since the Apple One is under the “purchases” apple ID and the 6TB is under my personal apple ID - even though it’s shared with everyone in my family. My apple id’s stretch back many years so could set up might be part of the issue? Thanks.
