MacBook Pro (2019 Intel) Won’t Charge After macOS 15.1 Update – Anyone Else Facing This?

Hey everyone,

After updating my MacBook to macOS 15 it started showing issues waking up after sleep but it was still working and charging perfectly. But after I updated to macOS 15.1, it immediately stopped charging. Now, it’s completely dead, and I can’t get it to power up. I’ve tried multiple cables, reset PRAM and SMC, but nothing seems to work. It showed charging animation a couple of times only when it was shut down but still didn't charge it.

I went to the Apple Store, but they weren’t much help. They didn’t even bother trying any of the usual fixes and said it’s just a coincidence that both charging ports failed immediately after the update. That explanation doesn’t sit right with me—it seems too much of a coincidence to not be related to the OS update.

Has anyone else experienced this issue after updating? I’d rather not have to spend $500+ to fix something that seems to be caused by OS update. If anyone has any advice or workarounds, I’d really appreciate the help!

To provide an update to this thread, I managed to get it working by completely draining the battery (this is crucial) and then charging it for ~4 hours, after which it powered on.

To answer your question, I had attempted all the steps including safe mode (the screen flickered so I couldn't log in), resetting the SMC, PRAM, etc. The Apple service team recommended that I visit the Apple store for diagnostics.

Surprisingly, after Apple had confirmed it was a hardware issue (the USB-C ports or the logic board), my MacBook powered up, which I find quite amusing.

I have the same MacBook Pro on OS 15.0.1 and have not experienced any of the issues with charging, time not updating, wallpaper loading or slow spotlight searches.

Not uncommon to have intermittent port issues and may be a sign of a more catastrophic event yet to come. Just make sure you have a working backup. You can run Hardware Diagnostics on your Mac, but many times it will not report a Hardware failure. It is best used to show a hardware problem then to prove that your Mac does not have a hardware problem.

I would recommend posting the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information, but will show Kernel Panics that have occurred and may point to a hardware problem. In addition, is will show the processes that are running on startup that may be conflicting with the OS causing the issues you are seeing.
