Why is my new iPhone 16 not turning on?

I have the new Iphone 16 and last night I charged it and turned it all the way off and since 6:30 this morning I have not been able to turn it back on. I have tried two chargers, three outlets, Ive tried the side button tricks, and nothing is working. its been almost 8 hours, how do I get it to turn back on?

I don’t know what “side button tricks” you tried or how you tried them. The "Up, Down, Side" instructions require some precision:

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP

     then

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

     then

  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky. If done correctly this will always work unless the phone has a hardware problem.

My iPhone 16 won’t turn on and this isn’t the first time. I know the side trick buttons but that is not working this time. My question is , What is Apple doing about this? Not how to fix it. If you are going to travel and you can’t turn your phone on, what good is it? Very disappointed with this phone and Apple.

Apple is doing nothing for the problem with your phone unless you contact their support. This is a problem specifically for your phone and perhaps a few others, but does not happen with around 100 million other phones. And I’ll add that if you installed any apps that claim to speed up, clean up, or protect your phone from “viruses” delete them; apps like this can cause the problem you have.

For personalized support:

Best way:

  • Install the Apple Support app on your iPhone or iPad - you can contact support directly from the app, and the tech will have (with your permission) access to diagnostic data on your phone

Other options:

(Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat)

The trick of vol up and then down and switch on does not work.

It will absolutely ALWAYS work if you do it correctly (the timing is important) unless your phone has a hardware problem. so if it does not work your iPhone has a hardware problem or you aren’t doing it carefully enough.

Well, this is a user-to-user forum, so no one can answer any question that begins with Why and also cannot answer any question about Apple’s future plans.

It is obviously an issue, but on a vanishingly small number of devices. So the best thing to do is contact Apple Support.

One suggestion I just had from another user who had this problem: it’s possible that the iPhone is working, but the screen is not lighting. They were able to swipe up on the black screen, which then turned on and unlocked with Face ID.

It is clear to me that there is a good case for a minor design flaw in the iPhone 16. I can't tell if it is in the hardware or software. I have just verified that I can always recreate the issue on power up by pressing the power button and releasing it before the apple logo appears. That much dwell on the button should not be necessary, but that's where I would be looking if I had access to the design documentation, especially the activity diagram if there is one. If there isn't, I'd build one and make certain that it is comprehensive and includes all post design patches up to and including manufacturing and software release. Implementation decisions can break good designs and are easy to get wrong if the process involves multiple handoffs.

That’s the way every iPhone has worked since the beginning of iPhone time. You need to hold the button until the Apple logo appears, probably to protect against accidental presses.

I had the same problem of iPhone 16 not turning on. The first one was returned to an Apple store soon after its introduction. The clerks there could not turn it on and I was given a new one, free. Apparently the problem was new to them. Now I learned the “3-step “ solution to turn it on, for my second iPhone 16. But, why does the problem start in the first place? I believe there are many people experiencing the same issue. Apple should fix it.

You are correct, it is not normal to require frequent forced restarts or for iPhones to shut down randomly. Yet most iPhone 16’s do not have this problem; it may be a manufacturing defect in some 16’s. Mine has never exhibited this, but there have been an unusually large number of posts about it. You should contact Apple Support and open a support case; that puts you on record as having this problem, and also lets Apple compile reports of the issue.

Apple’s formal support can be reached several ways

  • You can provide feedback to Apple at→ Product Feedback - Apple where your issue or suggestion will be recorded, tracked and matched with similar reports, but you will not get a reply

It nothing else works, take the iPhone 16 to an Apple store and use the warranty to replace it. There might be a manufacturing defect on one of the production lines at one of the factories that wasn't caught before phones were shipped to stores. Quality Assurance is a self-correcting filter, but there are occasional escapes. That's when manufacturer warranties help.

I have made 3 reports to apple support about this. Today was the first time they said they could replace my device for $32.77 (Canadian) but had no assurance this wouldn’t happen again. Their direct response:

“There is no known issues with any model iPhones in regards to the issue you are experiencing. If this issue was to arise again then it would be escalated to a senior advisor via phone support and they will be to offer you further options.”

So I declined replacement since I don’t want to potentially pay the fee and get another defective device.

I strongly recommend anyone with this issue to download the Apple Support app/make a Genius Bar appointment and report the issue every time to Apple. The more people that report it, the more likely they may recognize it as a “known issue” and either fix it or replace your phone for free.

These forums are unofficial so it doesn’t help to just post here to complain.

good luck!

I had the exact same problem of iPhone 16 pro not turning on. Someone on forum recommended to do the vol up then down then switch on button as quickly as possible such as the whole process in one sec. I did try this 24 hours later after it would not switch on and then it switched on, so I’m not sure if due to passage of time it worked or that worked to do in quick succession.

I took my iphone on 3 occasions to an Apple Store Genius Bar and when they tested it they said not a hardware issue and so must be a software issue. I tried tried different remedies with help of respective geniuses but problem still came back. They BLATANTLY refused to replace the phone with a new one claiming software issue. They also won’t acknowledge that this is a common problem. Each one has as different take on why this is happening.

I believe that it is a flaw in iPhone 16 as I never had this problem in my iPhone 15 which I wish I had kept. From now on I’m never going to switch the phone off as I don’t trust it to switch on and I cannot have delays with it not working and Apple company REFUSE to change the phone. The first incident happened within 6 weeks of the phone being purchased. I did but they phone through a telco company which is maybe why they are not prepared to replace it. The telco company also refused to replace it. So I have to accept that it is what it is. Frankly speaking, I was suprised at Apple intransigence in not replacing the phone after 3 failed switch on episodes and felt disappointed by their attitude as I am not the only one experiencing this issue, so must point to a glitch in their system which they themselves can’t put their finger on but shift the blame subtly to me the user.

To clarify, I have three times replicated the bad start condition by pressing and releasing the power button prior to the logo appearing. Each time it is then in the will not start condition until I use the up/down volume push sequence. That has always gotten the phone started but I do then have to wait a long time for the logo to appear (10-20 seconds). My previous dinosaur iPhone 8+ had no such issue. I didn't need to hold the power button longer than a second or two to start it after being powered down. My wife has an iPhone 15, and it also does not have this issue at all, just the iPhone 16. Given that they use the same software, I suspect an issue specific to the iPhone 16.
