I currently have a year old Airpods max that has a lightning port. I was wondering it is possible to do a trade in for a usb-c one.

AirPods aren't one of the devices that Apple accepts for trade it. See the following list from Apple Trade In - Apple

Even though Apple won't accept it for trade in, it's still a valuable device. You may be able to sell it on FB Marketplace or another online service.
