Unable to downgrade from Sequoia to Sonoma via TimeMachine backup

I wish to revert back to Sonoma from Sequoia as I'm having issues with my connected Audio interface.

I boot using <command> R , then select Restore from Timemachine.

I select the last backup made with Sonoma.

I get a message saying it's not possible to restore from that backup, I have to reinstall Macos and I have to use Migration Assistant (?)

Stumped.

Anyy help appreciated

Regards

Also, instructions found widely on internet on how to downgrade Macos clearly state that if you have a backup made before you upgraded, you are supposed to be able to just reinstall your entire system from that back up ( in fact, I have done this before) But no . . . now it doesn't work . . .

As is always true, the information you found on the internet is stale.

With the split of the OS from the Data, you can no longer restore the OS. You reinstall the OS you want, then Migrate your data from the backup. The Restore from Time Machine should have told you that.

You can erase the drive and use a bootable USB installer to reinstall Sonoma.

You could also just Add an APFS Volume to the drive, install Sonoma into that, boot from that volume, then Migrate from your backup.

But . . . it's so easy . . . Right?

It's not easy, but it's also not hard.

I'll just wipe the drive and start over, it's not hard - just a waste of my time.

Thanks for your reply

The trick is to erase the system drive first.
Create your Sonoma Bootable Installer.
Boot the computer and press cmd-R.
Open Disk Utility
Select the system drive and erase all volumes
Then you can follow Apple's instructions: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

It would be impossible to create a bootable installer once you erase the OS. You have to create the bootable installer first and start up from that drive before erasing your Mac.

lol, yeah I contacted the company who makes the audio interface and they said it's acceptable to have to unplug and re-plug in the audio device after a reboot to get it working. I disagree.

"How to downgrade macOS Sequoia to Sonoma with Time Machine

If you made a Time Machine backup of your system before you installed

macOS Sequoia, then you can really easily downgrade; here's how:

  1. Connect your backup disk to your Mac (the one that contains the Time Machine backup).
  2. Restart your device in recovery mode:

  3. - Hold Command - R for Intel-based Macs until the Apple logo appears.
  4. - Hold down your power button for Macs with Apple silicon until the startup options window appears.
  5. Select Options > Continue.
  6. From the macOS Utilities window, select Restore from Time Machine Backup > Continue > Continue.
  7. Select your Time Machine disk, find the backup you want to restore it to, and click Restore.

If you didn't make a Time Machine backup, no worries; there are other

ways, but you will lose any changes, so back up important files or

folders you've created since you installed macOS Sequoia."
