Percentages in Calculator update not working

With iOS 18, the Calculator app no longer auto-calculates percentages and only completes the equation after pressing =. Unfortunately, Apple has removed the old functionality, but you can manually calculate by doing 100 × 75% = 75, then 100 - 75. For an easier solution, try this website for quick and accurate percentage calculations.

To fix this, you can do it in two steps:

1. To find the amount you’re saving (the 75% off):

• Instead of typing “100 - 75%”, just multiply the original price by the percentage.

• So, type: 100 × 75% (or 100 × 0.75) and you’ll get 75, which is how much you’re saving.

2. To find the new price:

• Then subtract that amount from the original price.

• Type: 100 - 75 = to get the new price, which will be 25.

This way, you first calculate the percentage by multiplying, and then subtract to find the new price.

This should work just like the old method, but with the new steps!

100 x (1.0 - 0.75) =25

It’s very easy, instead of doing

“+” or “-“ on the added percentage (%) . Just do “x”.

I agree, this function was very handy for me in my job when I’m constantly having to do %calculations and variances and the old functionality made my life easier now I’ll have to old school it with actual math which is really annoying when the previous version made life easier. Isn’t technology meant to make life easier!

Yes I agree. I used the calculator to come up with tips as after you’d put in a total, let’s make it easy and say $100+20% the old calculator would show you that the amount was $20 then you could click enter and it would give you the full total. Now it only gives you the full total so you have to do an additional calculation to take the full total and subtract from your original number. This stinks as it bought me off guard in a restaurant trying to figure out a bill (that wasn’t as easy as $100 btw). If anyone knows if this feature is somewhere if not hopefully apple does a fix here otherwise the calculator is useless to me.

Yes we understand how to do that. I think everyone’s point is the extra work. It might only be a couple extra key strokes, but the other way was easier. The whole point of technology is to make our lives easier so when something changes and causes extra work (although small) it’s aggravating. That’s all….

Yes we all understand how to do math and what steps to take to work around the issue, the complaint is we do not want to have to take the extra steps. For those of us who use the calculator to make numerous calculations back to back for our businesses, the time saved adds up and matters. We want the old way back where it shows us the sales tax for examples on invoicing then the total so we don't have to do multiple calculations to get to each amount individually.

I hate the new update on calculator for the same reason. Apple need to give us back the old style with the percentages

For the total w/ a 20% tip:

Total x 1.2 =

For a 15% tip:

Total x 1.15 =

I agree. It’s only a few more taps on the screen but the old way was faster and I used it daily. I would use my phone over other calculators at my desk. Now I don’t.
