Percentages in Calculator update not working

Ever since ios18 the calculator app no longer shows exact amounts when calculating percentages. For example, I’m looking at an item that costs $100 and it’s on sale for 75% off. I want to calculate the new price of the item but also see how much money I am saving. I used to type in 100-75% when I pressed the % button it’d auto calculate the percentage and tell me 75 then when I hit = it would complete the equation and say 25. Now the app no longer auto calculates the percentage and doesn’t calculate the equation until I hit = which only gives me 20 for my earlier example. Is there a way to turn it back on or did Apple completely remove this? Is there a way for me to write this as a scientific equation or some other work around I can use on the new app?

With iOS 18, the Calculator app no longer auto-calculates percentages and only completes the equation after pressing =. Unfortunately, Apple has removed the old functionality, but you can manually calculate by doing 100 × 75% = 75, then 100 - 75. To fix this, you can do it in two steps:

1. To find the amount you’re saving (the 75% off):

• Instead of typing “100 - 75%”, just multiply the original price by the percentage.

• So, type: 100 × 75% (or 100 × 0.75) and you’ll get 75, which is how much you’re saving.

2. To find the new price:

• Then subtract that amount from the original price.

• Type: 100 - 75 = to get the new price, which will be 25.

This way, you first calculate the percentage by multiplying, and then subtract to find the new price.

This should work just like the old method, but with the new steps!

Yes I agree. I used the calculator to come up with tips as after you’d put in a total, let’s make it easy and say $100+20% the old calculator would show you that the amount was $20 then you could click enter and it would give you the full total. Now it only gives you the full total so you have to do an additional calculation to take the full total and subtract from your original number. This stinks as it bought me off guard in a restaurant trying to figure out a bill (that wasn’t as easy as $100 btw). If anyone knows if this feature is somewhere if not hopefully apple does a fix here otherwise the calculator is useless to me.

Yes we all understand how to do math and what steps to take to work around the issue, the complaint is we do not want to have to take the extra steps. For those of us who use the calculator to make numerous calculations back to back for our businesses, the time saved adds up and matters. We want the old way back where it shows us the sales tax for examples on invoicing then the total so we don't have to do multiple calculations to get to each amount individually.

The best workaround I’ve found is doing 100-75% which gives you a remaining 25 for the new total amount to be paid. Then by subtracting the original 100 from that you get -75 which tells you how much is being saved just in negative.

The same can be done for adding a tip except the final amount will still be positive instead of negative.

This comes out as only one additional step from the old way.
