MacBook Pro takes a long time to sync to external monitor

I'm connecting my MacBook pro via a USB-C to HDMI cable to a Dell 4k monitor to use as an extended display. When I switch on the monitor, it takes 30-45 seconds (and a few seemingly automatic attempts) for the monitor and my MacBook to kind of "handshake" each other, settle down and start working. The screen flicks on and off a few times, then once it has finally settled down it all works perfectly, but this process can take a while. Sometimes I have to unplug the cable from the USB-C port on my MacBook to make it work.

When I connect my work (Windows) laptop the same display with the same cable, it all kicks into life in 3 or 4 seconds.

Can anyone make any suggestions that might help?

I'm running Ventura 13.7 on a MacBook pro 2019 16 inch.

you should have LED with that, as it changes the direction of the discussion.

The Mac does not rely on windows-like side-loaded "Drivers" which are actually packages of resolutions and settings for a specific display. Instead, it goes straight to the immutable source -- it asks the display itself.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

if the display does not respond (because the switch is in the other position) no data AT ALL will be sent to the display.

Apple recommends using a converter to obtain HDMI.

If you must use HDMI, connect directly to the built-in HDMI port with a certified "Premium" or "ULTRA " HDMI cable.

if you need more help, please include the model-year of your MacBook Pro and what processor {plain, PRO, MAX} would be helpful. along with the EXACT model Dell display, or a link to its specs.

Hi Grant

Thanks for your response. Given I'm running a MacBook Pro 16" 2019, the only outputs on it are 4 USB-C ports, so I have no option but to connect to my display with a USB-C to HDMI cable. The monitor is a Dell S2721QSA 27" 4K monitor. Interestingly, when I have connected different displays (notably a 1080p monitor) there seems to be no issue.

My MacBook specs are as follows:

2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7

AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Thanks in anticipation

Thanks Grant. I will try display port, though unfortunately I have the monitor attached to 2 sources (work and home laptop) and an HDMI switch box that I use to flip between the 2 input sources. I may have to abandon this helpful solution if there is no way of resolving the USB-C > HDMI connection for my Mac.

Really appreciate the help though - thanks for coming back to me.
