Likely fake Airpods Pro 2?

Hi. So last week my 4 years-old "regular" Airpods 2 started having battery issues. I was hesitating to replace them with either Airpods 4 with ANC or Airpods Pro 2. I looked at discounted Airpods Pro 2 and purchased some for €120 which seemed very cheap to me. I received them quickly but the box they came in seemed sketchy and I think it's fake. But the Airpods inside looked new and genuine but a few things make me suspect they're fake:

-The price which is less than half the retail price for new Airpods Pro.

-The listing was in the "used" category but the description said they were new.

-The hinge on the case seems flimsy.

-The firmware won't update despite having tried every method (I had the same problem with the Airpods they replace despite them being genuine and they ended up updating on their own).

-They won't "automagically" connect to another Apple device when needed.

On the other hand, they do look genuine and do have a serial number recognized by Apple's checkcoverage page. I have the animation on my iPhone and they show up on Find My. Finally, spatial audio seems to work like on real ones.

What do you guys think? Are they real but buggy or did I buy really good fake ones?

Thanks in advance.

Yes if they were not purchased at Apple or Authorized Apple seller, they are likely fake. The accessory market for Apple products is huge and they copy the serial number of actual devices the same way they copy the physical appearance. The animation in Find My works because to Apple servers they match the original serial number of the device even though they may be using inferior components. You may find:

  • Poor Sound Quality
  • ANC may not work or works very poorly
  • Problems with connectivity
  • Poor range
  • If you do need a repair, you may get it denied

Serial number spoofing is very common, where thieves will take the serial numbers of real AirPods and put them with fake AirPods.

The only way to verify its authenticity is to bring them to an Apple Store where they can verify if they are genuine or not.

Also there is a saying, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Next time, you should only ever buy your Apple products from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, where you can verify your products are indeed genuine.

The thing is I did think they were too good to be true for the price. So I was very careful to every little thing that would seem sketchy upon receiving them. I also thought they might be stolen real ones but nothing about that on Apple's checkcoverage page. What do you think I could legally do against the seller if the Apple store says they're fake?

I think you should return them if you can. Serial numbers can easily be copied, and put onto a fake product. The jingle should not be flimsy, the real one are very secure, the animation pop up can also easily be copied, find my is the only thing that kinda stumps me but I assume it can be easily copied. If the material seems good and they work you can always try but if I were you, I would return them.

Returning the AirPods may not be an option..

Well they are that good! That’s what stumps me the most. And while testing the noise cancellation I inadvertently also checked the range by going in the bathroom at the opposite end of my flat with my iPhone on my bed. Honestly they scream both fake and genuine at the same time. Really my main doubt is on the impossibility of updating the firmware (and the price).

Actually the EU law enforces stores to allow returns within 30 days of purchase, both online and in retail stores. But if they’re fake I might keep them as well, they’re that good. I might look for real ones though. I didn’t mention it but I also have a genuine pair or AirPods Pro (1) that I use to listen to podcasts at home while doing chores or cooking with ANC enabled. I can confirm the things that make me suspect they’re fake are completely different on these and on par with my dying non Pro AirPods. Also I bought both of these discounted, but not as much as the new ones.

Hi. I ended up canceling my appointment with the Apple store and sent the fake Airpods back to customer service. Turns out they were fake indeed. I was refunded. Now I'll wait my Christmas bonus to buy genuine ones. My Airpods 2 really feel tired.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the update and confirmation that they were indeed fake. Your post will help others who find themselves in the same situation. Purchasing from Apple or Authorized Apple seller is the only way to ensure a legitimate pair of AirPods.
