"To cast, give Chrome access in system settings." -- which system settings?

I recently upgraded my MacBook Air's MacOS and Chrome browser, and now I can't cast to my Chromecast device. When I try, I get the following message: "To cast, give Chrome access in system settings" - along with a helpful link to the Security and Privacy settings. For the life of me, I can't figure out which settings need to be set to allow casting. Search engine searches turn up one page, which helpfully describes this as "not an issue" with Chrome.

Details:

MacBook Air M1, 2020, 16GB RAM, OS Sequoia 15.0.1

Chrome is Version 129.0.6668.101 (Official Build) (arm64)

Chromecast adapter is third gen, firmware 1.56.291998

I have a work-around with my phone, but this is driving me nuts.

I had the same issue. This was extremely annoying as I spent multiple days reading up forums etc on how to fix the problem. Nothing worked. I went through all the comments here as well and tried things that worked for others to no avail. I've got a Macbook Pro M1, and everything is up to date including chrome.

FINALLY figured out what instantly worked for me.

System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Screen & System Audio Recording

  • and then toggle "On" google chrome for both the 'Screen & System Audio Recording' AND the 'System Audio Recording Only".
  • I originally had to manually add google chrome using the "+" icon and then switch them on. It also only worked once I added it to both the "Screen & System..." & "System Audio..." sections. When only the former was added it still did not work.

Hope this helps some of you out as I found nothing about this online when trying to resolve my issue.

MacBook Air M2, 2022, 8GB

Was having the same issue but found a fix that worked for me.

I randomly started having the issue but only a few weeks after upgrading to Sequoia (so not sure if that is the problem). My wife has the same computer and hasn't updated and doesn't have this problem.

Anyway, I tried to use Time Machine to go back to an earlier save point (pre-Sequoia) and needed to use Migration Assistant. I must have done something wrong as Sequoia was still the OS after the reboot BUT, it's fixed the issue in Chrome and I no longer get the error message ""To cast, give Chrome access in system settings." Chromecast is working again for me.

yup, that's exactly the result i get too no matter what i try. even deep cleaned all of chrome via terminal, full new install from scratch, result still the same (and a gazillion chromes in local network toggled for access). extremely frustrating.

canary still works great, updated to newest version and still works. however, also canary now has several items in local network.

ugh, so dumb.

I have an iMac and MacBookPro, both were running OS 15.0.1. Previously, Chromecast worked great on both. The settings were the same. I could use Chromecast with no problem on the MacBook, but it wouldn't work on the iMac.

I removed giving Chrome access, restarted, gave access again, and restarted, without resolution. I deleted Chrome, downloaded, and reinstalled it with no change. I downloaded and installed OS 15.1 on the iMac this morning, and still cannot use Chromecast. I also still get that message, "To cast, give Chrome access in System Settings". Total frustration!

This is how it looks like after uninstall chrome and clear the bin, apparently the system still think there is or are google chrome installed, so it DOES NOT WORK after reinstall

age checking question of those pxxn website, who is going to answer under 18 ???????

but in this case, if you accidentally say no, you can never cast again

and there is no other way to reset the privacy setting, I have tried the command line in terminal, it literally reset everything except the local network, I am done trying, really frustrating

I got very frustrated with this and contacted Apple twice who tried very hard but ultimately failed to solve it. I have just followed the AI advice from Google which says this:-

You can also cast from Chrome to your TV by:

  1. Opening Chrome
  2. Selecting More Cast, save, and share. Cast in the top right

It is reffering to the three dots up in the top right of the page...... Click on "Cast, save and share" and then choose "cast". For me, today, this works!!!

I was using Canary, all good until about 3hrs ago, Canary updated and desktop sites no longer displayed the Cast symbol. I can still right click or go in to Canary settings and choose cast and it does cast, but then won't play the video and continues to play the video on the website. I've tried all the usual things of rebooting unplugging etc but I don't know what's happened. Not sure I can tolerate a Google help chat. Also, out of interest I thought I'd try Chrome and could suddenly cast issues but then it stopped and it's back to give permission in settings. So now can't cast from either Chrome or Canary. Casting from an app on my iphone works fine of course.

Okay, so I just did this and it worked! Thanks for the detailed run through. Hopefully it remains stable as with you experience. Some other fixes which seemed to solved the issue went away if the macbook was shut down or restarted.

I had been using Canary successfullly to cast, after weeks of no luck with Chrome, but now Canary has also stopped casting. I have mostly given up trying with either and was just using the apps on the Google TV/Chromecast home screen but that isn't doable for certain sites.

I may try it again to see if it works for Canary as well, although Canary can be a bit wobbly sometimes anyway.

Thanks!
