"To cast, give Chrome access in system settings." -- which system settings?

I recently upgraded my MacBook Air's MacOS and Chrome browser, and now I can't cast to my Chromecast device. When I try, I get the following message: "To cast, give Chrome access in system settings" - along with a helpful link to the Security and Privacy settings. For the life of me, I can't figure out which settings need to be set to allow casting. Search engine searches turn up one page, which helpfully describes this as "not an issue" with Chrome.

Details:

MacBook Air M1, 2020, 16GB RAM, OS Sequoia 15.0.1

Chrome is Version 129.0.6668.101 (Official Build) (arm64)

Chromecast adapter is third gen, firmware 1.56.291998

I have a work-around with my phone, but this is driving me nuts.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.0

This is the ONLY thing that has worked for me! Been watching this thread for over a month. Thanks!

This: DISABLE this feature flag: chrome://flags/#use-network-framework-for-local-discovery.

I followed the steps, but had to take exceptions. For step 1, there was no entries for Google Chrome in Screen & System Audio Settings. So, I installed Google Chrome, then went back to enable it in Screen & System Audio Settings. I did not add Google Chrome to System Audio Recording Only. I was not certain if that overrides Screen & System Audio Settings, so left it alone. For step 5, I saw that Google Chrome was enabled--just two instances, not five. At that point, I checked to see if Cast worked and it did. At that time or thereabouts, I was prompted twice within a minute or two to allow Chrome to access the local network. I enabled it in both cases. I checked Cast and it worked. Since I have been able to make this work before by enabling via Administrator only to find out that it failed after rebooting, I rebooted the system to see if Cast still worked after reboot. It did!

It is difficult to tell if this was fixed in Sequoia 15.1 or in the latest version of Chrome, which I just updated after installation. For accurate troubleshooting, I like to chang only one variable at a time, but did not in this case. At any rate, between the two upgrades--Apple and Google, the problem appears to be resolved. I'll be back here again, though if the problem happens again. Thanks everyone for contributing. This has been a real puzzle, but this seems to have been one that users had no control over. Too bad.

Cheers.

hey guys...if nothing is working for you try this method..... toggle off the local network permission for chrome in settings..... Leave it off keep on doing your normal things and at some point chrome will ask for the permission on its own and you just have to press allow on the pop up permission and thats it. Remember when you toggle off quit chrome at least once and then start using it normally.

In case this does not work for you either then alternate solution is to dload chrome canary and use casting through it after allowing the local network permissions that it pops up once you set it up.

Hope this helps everyone !

As an update to this: So after I wrote that, Sequoia 15.1 installed and the computer restarted and was back to being unable to cast. Repeating the 'dragging Chrome to bin then quitting and restarted' made no difference unlike last time. So I tried a safeboot start as suggested by online Apple Chat, my Macbook air had a hissy fit and after the first log in screen it went to the 2nd log in screen just flashed between that and a black screen, until I just shut the computer down. Restarted in normal mode and now I can cast again. Good I can cast again, but honestly don't know what's happening.

I've spent two days trying to get this sorted. Lengthy online chats with both Google and Apple. Apple were like "It's a Google issue!" And Google - "It's an Apple issue". I tried various things including Google' suggestion of going into the MDM and changing the firmware but I can't do that on a personal computer and Apple said that shouldn't need to be done even if I could. Google didn't seem to take on board that Chrome and casting worked fine until the recent update of Chrome & that casting from phone apps worked just Desktop Chrome was an issue. Deleting & reinstalling Chrome worked as a one-off, but if I quit Chrome, shut down my Macbook and started up & reopened Chrome I could no longer cast. Playing around with access in local network and Screen recording etc -quitting, rebooting and other combinations made no difference. Rebooting all devices and making sure operating systems were up to date using the same wifi etc all made no difference. In the end Google told me to download and use Canary, "that will work", but said they would escalate to another support team only for them to be less helpful than previous chats. So I downloaded Canary and I've been using it for 24hrs now and I'm able to cast with no issues. Regular Chrome is still an issue. Will see how Canary goes over the next few days.

We've managed to fix this problem. Go to System Preferences >> Privacy & Security >> Screen & System Audio Recording. If Google Chrome is not in this list then click the plus button on the bottom left of the top box (you will need administrator access for this) and add Google Chrome. Also ensure that in System Preferences >> Privacy & Security >> Local Network, all the Google Chrome options have the toggle on (to the right). Then restart Chrome when prompted and you should be able to cast.

Okay, so I just did this and it worked! Thanks for the detailed run through. Hopefully it remains stable as with you experience. Some other fixes which seemed to solved the issue went away if the macbook was shut down or restarted.

I had been using Canary successfullly to cast, after weeks of no luck with Chrome, but now Canary has also stopped casting. I have mostly given up trying with either and was just using the apps on the Google TV/Chromecast home screen but that isn't doable for certain sites.

I may try it again to see if it works for Canary as well, although Canary can be a bit wobbly sometimes anyway.

Thanks!

This looked promising. However, after uninstalling Chrome and all its lingering files (with the help of ChatGPT), removing Chrome from Screen and Audio recording, turning off Local Network for Chrome (2 of them) and rebooting, those instances of Chrome are still in Local Networks, even if turned off. tccutil reset LocalNetwork (recommended by ChatGPT) failed. After reinstalling Chrome, same problem of asking me to give Chrome access; again and again.

this is tiresome.

I was able to login with another account that was an admin account, launched Chrome and casting worked under that profile. Went back to user profile having issues and now it works, so that triggered something to start working. Had tried all the suggestions of removing chrome, turning Local Network and Screen Share off/on and none of that worked. So if you have another account, or if you don't just create one, log into that account and see if casting will work, and if it does that should fix the account/profile having issues.
