A neoprene or other type of padded sleeve is all you really need. Never use any kind of case that clips on and never put anything on the screen.
I've been using the same cheap neoprene sleeve I bought about for $10 years ago on Amazon. If I'm using a messenger back or backpack that already has a padded section, I don't need it.
