Unable to stop screen recording on MacBook Pro

When I do Cmd-shift-5 and start recording i see no means to see the recording is taking place and worse no on screen means of stopping the recording. I have to restart my Mac. Advice appreciated.

How to record the screen on your Mac

stop recording, click the Stop button in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).
