Locked out of my Apple Account forever--and my email address???

In 2013, I created a Recovery Key for my Apple ID. I was informed yesterday that I (unknowingly) gave up the option to recover a lost password by creating this key, and that to use the key, I had to be signed in to the Apple Account. If I could sign in, WHY WOULD I NEED THE KEY? What a stoopid policy!


My issue now is my main email address is an alias in this forever-locked Apple Account. Will I eventually lose use of that email address? Does Apple purge inactive/permanently locked accounts? My advisor did not know. If anyone here knows, I'd appreciate your thoughts...


Oh, and don't create a Recovery Key whatever you do.

The Recovery Key feature is for those who think they need extra security such that even Apple cannot help you recover your account, but it also includes accepting full responsibility for account security. Accounts can be recovered, but under very specific criteria. - If you still have access to your Apple ID and password but have lost your recovery key:

"You can generate a new recovery key from Settings or System Preferences on a trusted device." Refer to the steps in Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support about how to do this on different types of equipment (Apple equipment only).


- If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, have lost your recovery key, but still have access to a trusted device.

"you can try to regain access using your trusted device protected by a passcode." The process is outlined in this support article: If you forgot your Apple Account password - Apple Support This does not involve using a recovery key.


- If you have a forgotten password and you do not have access to a trusted device:

"you can use your recovery key, a trusted phone number, and an Apple device to reset your password."


- If you have lost your recovery key and have lost access to both your account and trusted items:

A recovery key is designed as an alternative to Account Recovery ( How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support ) which is where Apple helps you regain access to your account. However, "when you generate a recovery key, you can't use account recovery." You can try to contact Apple (see: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support ), but to me the previous statement implies that setting up a recovery key excludes Apple from being able to do anything. Apple says: "Using a recovery key is more secure, but it means that you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently."

● If your account has been disabled for “security reasons” the solution is to reset your password as outlined in this document: If you forgot your Apple Account password - Apple Support

If you find you can’t sign in, reset your password, or receive verification codes, normally you would request account recovery (read this support article: How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support ) to regain access to your account. If you are using a recovery key, account recovery is disabled and you use the key to recover your account.


Signed-in in this case means you have another device that has been signed in and is therefore "trusted." You use that to get an authentication code which you use to verify that you are indeed somebody who can prove to Apple you are the account owner. Read about trusted devices in the link I provided earlier.

Thanks for your detailed reply. Much appreciated. It is different than what I was told by a support advisor yesterday. I am locked out for "security reasons." Not sure why that is. I have the Key, I don't have the password, and I was told since none of my devices are signed in (how could they be, if the account is locked??), I cannot use the key. What is the key for then?

I was not offered that option. Only told unless I had a device signed in to that Account, I could not use the key, and since I created the key, I could not use the recover the account method nor reset the password. I have a key, a trusted phone number, and lots of devices. Was my advisor ill-informed? I know it's a screwy situation.


My main concern is not the Apple Account. I am concerned at some point Apple will purge inactive Accounts or I will get a new device and be asked to update iCloud settings...and won't be able to. What happens to my email address then? No one, so far, knows. Sorry to be long winded. I think this is an unusual and uncommon situation.

Thanks again. The account is locked and there are no trusted devices signed in to it. I did go through Apple Support app on my wife's phone to try it that way. I'm waiting (another) 2 days for their reply.

What's missing for me is how I use the recovery key, when I cannot use Account Recovery? I can't find that anywhere. My advisor told me it cannot be done, but then why have a Key at all?


I appreciate your reply and patience. I feel like I'm stuck in a loop. I can only recover my account with my key, but there is no place to use my key. 🤯 I'm locked out of iCloud.com to see the mail. I need to find a mail expert to see if my address is connected to my iCloud account.
