Why is my iPhone 16 camera not focusing on documents?

When I use my iPhone16 to verify my photo identity via 3rd party verification software such as Lloyds Bank, Acrobat SIgn, Echosign etc, the camera will not autofocus as you get closer to the document. Never had an issue with my iphone 13

Is this an Apple or 3rd party problem?

Hi!

This is a little bit of an Apple issue and a little bit of a 3rd party issue.

The Apple issue

This is a problem with the hardware and it has to do with how cameras work.

Compared to iPhone 13, the iPhone 16 has a much larger lens that lets in a lot more light. A side effect of this is that the camera physically cannot focus on things that are very close.

The 3rd party issue

There are ways to deal with that. For example, when you use Apple's camera app, your iPhone will automatically switch to the wide-angle lens when you get close to something. This lens can focus on close items.

Third parties could also have implemented that (or a similar) feature, but they didn't.
