I have lost an important spreadsheet in my numbers app and other spreadsheets have gone missing. I am not sure how to look in "the Cloud" It is suggested that these docs might be there. I don't see why they would have been moved.

In Safari or another browser you can try signing into iCloud.com to see if the documents are there.
You might also try File > Open Recent in your Numbers app.
If you have no luck with this it may be time to look in Time Machine or whatever other backup system you are using.
