In the past I've used my current iPhone as a trade-in for my new one; however, this time I purchased my new iPhone and don't need my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Any ideas on how to successfully and safely sell my iPhone 13 Pro Max?

I wouldn't advertise it on Facebook, Offer Up or eBay. Too easily scammed by people you don't know. See if any friends or family would have an interest buying your phone. And definitely do what is in the link Kurt Lang provided before you sell it to anyone.
If you simply can't find a buyer, you can still take to your Apple Store and get an Apple Gift Card for the trade value of the phone.
