Dear all, since upgrading to Sequoia I keep getting an annoying pop up when restarting my MacBook saying there is no application set to open the URL chrome extension.

Specifically the message says 'There is no application set to open the URL chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/translateSandbox/translateSandbox.html' Anyone know why I am seeing this and more importantly how to get rid of it as it pops up randomly during sessions, sometimes at login and sometimes later. Have installed Chrome without effect and used Onyx cleaner but it's still there. Have a similar problem with an old MacBook Air. Trying to associate a programme from the application list also does not work last there aren't any that are compatible. Any help gratefully received, just want to remove it as its annoying.

thanks in anticipation!

Antivirus software: Avast, Microsoft Defender, Apple, and Malwarebytes

You should only use the built-in system security. Multiple antivirus conflict with each other and the system security. This can cause crashes and does not help with security.

Avast in particular is pretty bad and should not be used at all.

To make matters worse, you also have "cleanmymac", which many of us consider malware.

Please completelty uninstall avast and cleanmymac; consider also uninstalling microsoft defender. MalwareBytes should not be kept running continuously, but only be run manually if and when you feel there could be a reason to (which rarely is the case, anyway).

Check how your mac behaves after getting rid of the above.

Then please run Etrecheck again and post a new report, to make sure remnants of these things are not left in place.

Good question. I found that page by doing a search only for ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc . While there are 12 instances of that exact string on the page, the rest does not match your message.

There are two other topics on these forums that do match your message, but neither has a solution.

But at least there's a commonality - Chrome.

A search says Chrome stores its extensions on a Mac here:

~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default

So, if you open the Library/Application Support/Google folder in your user account, you can delete the Chrome subfolder. That should get rid of any installed Chrome extensions.

Empty the trash, then restart the Mac to see if that clears the issue.

You have something in your Launch Agents or Launch Daemons that is trying to access this url.

Restart in Safe Mode. Does it happen? I fully expect not.

If the problem reappears when restarting normally (which I expect it might): Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

We should be able to find the cause from that report.
