Apple Watch messages not updating with iPhone

My series 4 watch is showing it is paired with my IPhone 13 but it is not updating messages with my iPhone, and sometimes it will show the messages sent on my watch but won’t show them on my phone. Both devices are showing that they are up to date on the current software.
