Lock screen stuck showing video from in-app browser

Whenever I watch a video using an in-app browser (for example, opening a YouTube link in the Reddit app), that video will remain on my lock screen until I turn off the device — it will not go away. I can close every app on my phone, including the initiator (like Reddit), but it makes no difference as, I’m guessing, the in-app browser is more of a system thing than an app thing.

Is there really no way to fix this? I don’t want to have to power cycle my device 3-4x a day just to fix this obvious mistake.

Try and Force Restart your iPhone EXACTLY as shown below and see whether that resolves the issue:

  • Press and quickly release Volume UP button
  • Press and quickly release Volume DOWN button
  • Press and Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears and then release the Side button (Can take up to 20 seconds. (DO NOT release Side Button when invited to Slide Power OFF).

See if the above procedure takes care of the issue.

Not sure which method you use to “power cycle” your device.

“Power cycle”, as in, a basic off & back on.

But you must’ve misread: I don’t want to have to turn off my phone just to dismiss something on the lock screen. If an in-app browser plays a video, that lock screen widget will remain long after the video has been dismissed and the app closed.

No one should have to turn their phone off and back on again just to dismiss a video player.

Please read what I've written, or ask questions if you don't understand. That won't do anything but temporarily dismiss the widget.

My lock screen in general isn't stuck, I can use my phone just fine. It's that there's widget stuck on the lock screen when it shouldn't be. No amount of restarts change the behavior, as I mentioned. Every time you play any media, iOS will re-add the widget, but the lifecycle for in-app browser media erroneously has it remain.

To be clear:

  1. Watch media using any in-app browser. I'm using the Reddit iOS app as an example, but anything will do.
  2. Lock phone
  3. Observe that media widget is now on the lock screen.
  4. Close media (exit in-app browser, return to app)
  5. Lock phone & observe media widget is still on the lock screen, despite the media no longer playing
  6. Close the app entirely
  7. Lock phone & observe media widget is still on the lock screen, despite the host app no longer running
  8. Turn off phone & turn back on
  9. Observe media widget is now gone

But the second you do step 1 again, you'll have the same issue. It's impossible to close this widget, it'll remain on the lock screen forever.
