Can't fill and sign documents with Adobe reader freeversion

Adobe has changed the design of current Adobe Acrobat Reader applications. This makes it harder to find things. On the Reader View menu, select Disable New Acrobat, and in the right side panel click the Fill & Sign icon:

and that provides you with the following toolbar:

When you click Sign yourself, you end up with an option to enter your signature or initials:

Tested: Acrobat Reader v2024.003.20180 on macOS Sequoia v15.0.1.

But you should be able to do with Preview.

People should avoid filling in any PDF forms using the Preview app since Preview has a bug where it will end up locking the PDF file from even being read. There are multiple posts on the Sonoma forum regarding this issue.

RE: digital replica signatures:

some extreme privacy-skeptical readers suggest it may be a Bad Idea™ to have your ACTUAL replica signature anywhere on the Internet in digital form. They suggest that if the Application accepts a replica signature in their own font, just use that and limit the propagation of digital copies of your ACTUAL person-made signature.

I do not fill or sign PDFs unless it is a tax form… 😉 and I only provided a typed entry example above that Acrobat Reader generated as a signature for demonstration purposes.

Your advice should be observed by those who do fill and sign PDFs though.
