Recently Touch ID failed to work. It's a vicious circle: can't add or delete a fingerprint because it asks for Touch ID which doesn't work. I contacted Apple via chat and they sent articles that didn't solve it because all their recommendations ask for Touch ID to continue.

then I would recommend taking your iPhone to an Apple Store or authorized Apple service center for evaluation. It may be a failed touch sensor which is a hardware problem needing repair.

Thank you, Varjek. I'm trying to avoid such a trip to the nearest Apple service center, it's 2 hours away and I work fulltime. But your advice is solid and I'll plan to do that.
