International Traveler - can you have an eSim from two different countries? And can you make sure you don't get roaming charges on both numbers?

I have the new iphone 16 pro. I travel between the USA and Australia. I have a phone number and cellular plan in each country. I have two phones. When I am in the USA, I turn my Aussie phone to airplane mode to ensure I don't not pay roaming charges. I do the same when I am in Australia. I keep my USA phone charged and set to airplane mode, which allows me to receive texts, which is needed for various websites that want dual authentication by sending me a code.

My question is - On the new iPhone 16 pro, can I have both of my sims on this one phone and select which number I want to use, but still making sure I am not paying international fees.

Let’s assume that you purchased your IPhone 16 Pro and installed an Australian eSIM and a US eSIM. In this assumption, you are in the US. In this case, you would turn the Australian eSIM OFF and leave the US eSIM ON. In this state, you will not be able to send or receive any texts or calls related to your Australian eSIM. Meanwhile, your US eSIM will perform as intended in the US. No roaming charges on your Australian eSIM.

The other option in the scenario above is to have both eSIMs active but have all data go through your US eSIM. In this state, you will be able to make / receive calls and texts on your Australian eSIM but roaming charges will apply. All data usage would go through the US eSIM so you will be fine on that front.
