Can I prevent smaller files from replacing raw photos in iCloud?

The iphone 15 allows for raw photo quality. if you choose to maximise space when syncing icloud, does it keep the original large file in icloud even if it keeps synching? the photos on the iphone have been converted to smaller files to save space. I dont want the smaller files saved in place of the original raw files which were originally uploaded, but I find every time I synch its uploading all my photos each time, but they are now the smaller files instead of the original large raw photos. does it always keep the original large photo?

Have you tried to download the Unmodified Original at iCloud.com?

It's under the 3 dots and More Download Options…

I don't use ProRAW, but this was taken using Canon's RAW format, and the original is, as the name implies, the original RAW format.

Photos is a non-destructive editor-- it never changes the original file. When you edit a picture, Photos remembers the steps and then reconstructs the edited version on the fly. With Optimize Storage turned on in an iPhone, the phone keeps smaller edited versions, but the full sized file remains at iCloud.com.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. So, if the ProRaw stays in icloud without any risk of being replaced by the smaller version from the iphone, why is it appearing to sync all the photos each time it syncs? I’m travelling and using local sim cards and hotel wifis, and I’m having more and more trouble as the number of images increases into the tens of thousands. It keeps pausing the synching due to ‘wifi connectivity issues’ and it’s usually my latest photos that fail to get uploaded when this happens. I know Apple doesn’t provide the simple option to choose, but Is there a work around to upload only the newest ProRaw images?

Hi. travelling internationally for over a year now (Europe, Middle East, North America), and I buy a local sim card, as well as have my home international roaming. I have to have synching paused all the time because continuous uploading chews through local sim prepaid data plans on day one of any local sim monthly plan and international roaming data is cost prohibitive. Even if you buy an in-country sim with unlimited data, it will slow to a snail pace after the first sync with photos because there is always an upload/download limit before its slowed for the rest of the month . When I unpause I don't want it syncing all my photos (now nearly 15,000).

As the photo library size gets bigger the syncing process is taking so long, and many times stops because of network issues. It seems to be one of the flaws of the icloud system as it presumes people are on home country or business plans, with unlimited data and fast upload speeds. A solution for selecting specific photos at the time of synching is what I need to be able to do to save data for other purposes (eg gps)
