Your photos will not be deleted, but a lower quality, and therefore smaller, version will be stored locally on your device (if it is low on storage) - the full version will be in iCloud. When you choose to open a photo that has been “offloaded” locally - the original version of the photo will be downloaded and displayed. Often you will not even notice this.
If you run out of space in iCloud, you will receive many warnings to upgrade to a higher storage plan in iCloud. Your photos will not be deleted - but if you run out of storage, iCloud will stop syncing new photos.

No, nothing is deleted automatically.
Thank you. The reason I ask is that this year, all of a sudden, a LOT of my photos in my iPhone 16 disappeared and I have never been able to find them.
