Iphone and Airpod Max Charging Compatibility

I pre-ordered the iPhone 16 Pro Max and received it this week. This is my first time being able to upgrade since the iPhone 11, so I was excited. In August 2024, I bought the AirPods Max for $600, fully expecting them to work with future Apple products. Now, I’ve just found out they aren’t charging-compatible with the new iPhone due to the change in the charging system.

I’m honestly crushed.

There was no mention or warning of this change when I bought them, and I feel like I’ve wasted $600 on headphones I’ve had for less than 60 days. Has anyone else experienced this? How is Apple handling this? I really need customer service to come through here—can I return or exchange them for a compatible model?

Any help or advice is appreciated!

You don’t charge the AirPro Max with an iPhone. You charge it with a USB-A or USB-C charger and matching cable. You can use either a Lightning to USB-A or Lightning to USB-C cable. Both are widely available for a few dollars, and I believe it came with a Lightning to USB-A cable.

Of course they are charging compatible. You charge the AirPods Max using the cable that came with them and a USB-A or USB-C power source.

This is totally independent of the iPhone, which you also charge with a USB-A or USB-C power source, or MagSafe wireless charger.
