Unable to change Calendar notification sounds on my iPhone 16 Pro

I have the new iPhone 16pro and this phone along with the past 5 iPhones have not allowed calendar notifications to change outside of the little vibrate and faint notification sound that I always miss. I’ve missed so many appointments and the only thing that works is reminders but it’s ridiculous that with today’s tech, apple hasn’t figured it out yet. How can I make the apple calendar custom sounds actually work? Anyone else have this problem or am I the only knucklehead?
