Heart Rate Monitor Not Working When Chest Strap is Disconnected

I have an external heart rate monitor chest strap connected via Bluetooth to my Apple Watch. When I disconnect the chest strap when I take it off, the Apple Watch heart monitor does not come back on. I have to completely turn off the watch and turn back on just for the heart monitor to come back on every single time. Is there a fix for this?
