Password entered on my iPhone not getting masked.

Whenever I try to create a password for the first time or change my password, the screen does not hide it. There is a yellow bar over the password field revealing the password. This happens even with the eye symbol with a line across it indicating the password is hidden. This issue happens across all my devices even after a clean reinstall!

Was experiencing the same issue. Was able to fix it by going into the Passwords app settings and turning off ‘Suggest Strong Passwords’. Fine with me since I don’t use that feature. Still such a serious security flaw since that is the default behavior and clearly a bug not even fixed in 18.3

A bit more explicit detail on the user flow when signing up to a service on iPhone XS / iOS 18.0.1, in case it helps clarify what I'm seeing. Note: I think this is a webpage in a SafariViewController embedded within an app rather than in Safari app itself:

  • Tap on Password text field with intention of entering a password for a new account we're setting up. OBSERVE:
    • Password textfield background changes to yellow.
    • Apple's "Use Strong Password? - Save & Fill / Not Now" overlay appears at the bottom of screen (Note that this does not appear in screenshots or videos, presumably for security, since it involves passwords).
  • Tap "Not Now". OBSERVE:
    • "Use Strong Password?" overlay disappears.
    • POSSIBLE APPLE BUG: Password textfield background stays yellow even though we are not using the password manager to auto-fill or auto-generate at this point.
  • Tap Password textfield again to bring up keyboard. OBSERVE:
    • Background of Password textfield is still yellow.
    • "Hide" toggle is ENABLED.
  • Start typing on keyboard. OBSERVE:
    • POSSIBLE APPLE BUG: We can see all password characters even though "Hide" toggle is enabled and we have no dealings with the password manager at this point.

When is Apple going to fix this?! This is serious for so many people and needs to be prioritized. I have a 14, 18.3.1 and NEVER had this issue before these updates! Tapping the eye icon WILL NOT hide your password while you’re creating passwords on websites! If you tap the icon AFTER you’ve started typing, your existing text will turn to dots. But then when you resume typing everything is exposed again. Apple support where are you?! Imagine how many people are googling this or not reporting it because they don’t know how to. I’m afraid to uninstall the passwords app because I don’t want to lose my current data.

Hello GeeZ06, thanks for your reply. Passwords autofill feature (when enabled) adds a yellow highlight to password fields and forces the password to be visible in plain text, even when the 'hide password' eye symbol is crossed out. When I disable autofill, passwords work normally - showing as dots and only revealing when clicking the eye symbol. I don’t recall it as being a normal behaviour. In the past new created passwords were always hidden by dots even when autofill was on. Would you agree?

Hi

have you managed to find a fix?

please post. I’m having the same issue in IOS 18.2

also there was a massive security issue with IOS 18 that was only fixed in 18.2 as in the password app had a massive security problem until the fix and it had to do with unencrypted http request for getting icons for the sites you saved passwords from.

I don’t understand the problem.

I was on a website earlier today using Windows trying to create a password and I couldn’t see the passwords I entered. It told me they weren’t the same and I couldn’t see them to fix the differences. It took me five minutes to create a password.

Hello LaynLan, I better understand your issue now, however I've not been able to duplicate it. I tried two different web sites to start a user account, but each time my password was in DOTS and no Yellow background. So the only advice I have is maybe let Apple know about this on their Feedback form, especially if this on a new iPhone. Maybe stop by your local Apple Store if one is close to you and show the issue to them for any possible resolution for you.

I've had the same problem so have looked in to it a bit. Findings:

  • Appears to be an iOS 18 bug (Observed on 18.0.1).
  • Does not occur for me on iOS 17.5.1
  • Is tied to Apple's "AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys" setting - Toggle that off (or keep it on but toggle off "Autofill From Passwords") and the issue no longer happens.

@GeeZ06: If you're trying to reproduce, ensure you're on iOS 18 (maybe specifically 18.0.1?) and have "AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys" AND "AUTOFILL FROM Passwords" settings enabled in the "Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords" menu.
