I needed to change the batteries of my 4 airtags and I was able to open them like stated in the website but they just refuse to close. I don’t know what to do, I bought the exact battery I needed to and it fits. The problem seems to be in the “lid” of the airtag.
Since I experienced this same issue myself when changing one of my AirTag's batteries, I realized that I did not have the cover on correctly, and thus, it wouldn't turn to the closed position.
If you look at both the cover you will see three small tangs, and matching slots in the tag itself. Carefully align them, then press down and rotate clockwise to close the cover.
