New formats for photos?

I just purchased an iPhone 16 (not a PRO model), having previously owned an iPhone 12 Pro. On the former phone, I would use the PhotoRAW setting, to get pictures with more detail and dynamic range. Now that I have switched, I am seeing several new formats - JPEG Max and HEIF Max. I cannot find good descriptions of the differences between these formats and PhotoRAW in the Apple Support literature. A clarification would be appreciated.

Let’s take a look closer:

  • JPEG Max typically refers to the highest quality setting for JPEG images, where the compression is minimal, resulting in larger file sizes but better image quality.
  • HEIF Max would refer to the highest quality setting for HEIF images, which can maintain high image quality while being more efficient in terms of file size compared to JPEG Max.

Key Differences:

  • Compression Efficiency: HEIF generally offers better compression efficiency than JPEG, meaning it can achieve similar or better quality at smaller file sizes.
  • Quality: At their maximum settings, HEIF images can retain more detail and dynamic range compared to JPEG images.
  • Features: HEIF supports additional features like image sequences (for live photos), transparency, and more extensive color information, which JPEG does not support.

All the best! 👋🏼😉
