Check Network Settings Preferences. Make sure WiFi is selected, choose Connect Automatically, choose the Advanced button and make sure your WiFi network is first in the list (with High Sierra you can order the list), you may even want to delete any other WiFi networks that are there). Reboot in Safe Mode, then reboot normally, is it better? If not, then yes, the hardware might be degrading. I have a 2010 MacBook Air, still working well, connects to WiFi immediately, but any Mac that old can fail at any time.
