I know the network is working as other devices are on the network. I see the network in the list of networks, but imac keeps searching for several minutes before getting on. Was never like this until recently

If that is all wrong with the iMac at that age, then you should count your blessings.
Have you recently changed routers, router settings, added any new devices to the router, rearranged the furniture or added any other devices around the router or the iMac that could be causing the delay...?

Check Network Settings Preferences. Make sure WiFi is selected, choose Connect Automatically, choose the Advanced button and make sure your WiFi network is first in the list (with High Sierra you can order the list), you may even want to delete any other WiFi networks that are there). Reboot in Safe Mode, then reboot normally, is it better? If not, then yes, the hardware might be degrading. I have a 2010 MacBook Air, still working well, connects to WiFi immediately, but any Mac that old can fail at any time.
Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?
Does the Wireless Diagnostics report any issues...?
Nothing has changed. We had a lot of outages due to Xfinity troubles recently, but that's ok now. Still puzzled. Could it be the iMac is having a hardware issue?
