I just received a new AirTag. I’m trying to figure out how to pair it to my iPhone. Everything online says just hold it near the phone and a screen will magically appear for me to pair the devices. That is not happening. I thought maybe I needed to charge the battery, so I placed it on a mag charger for several hours, and still nothing.

First, the battery in the AirTag is NOT rechargeable. Placing the tag on a "mag charger" could cause the battery to be damaged, or even (worst-case) explode.
There is a small plastic tang on the battery cover that needs to be removed in order to activate the tag's battery. Once removed, placing the tag near your iPhone should allow the tag to be recognized and start the pairing process.
Just in case you missed a step, please take a look at the following support article:
If the tag still does not show up on your phone, then it is possible that this tag is defective. As such, your next step would be to contact Apple Support directly for further assistance with this matter. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.

Thank you for the information. I'm glad neither of those things happened. The battery still works, because from time to time it makes a noise, and my phone says "There is an airtag tracking you," but it still doesn't pair.
I have looked at the support article, and followed the directions, but it doesn't pair.
