MacBook Pro Retina 13" 2015 (A1502 EMC 2835) - Monterey Install Problem

Trying to install Monterey with a bootable USB drive on the above machine (immediately after installing a new SSD)

Holding option while rebooting with the USB drive installed took me to the "Install Monterey OS" option, which I selected.

I then saw the screen with the "about x minutes remaining" progress bar, and all seemed to be going well.

Partway through the machine rebooted itself, and after a while took me back to the recovery mode screen, which gives me the chance to install the OS again from scratch. Something seems to have gone wrong here - the installation doesn't seem to have worked.

If I select "Startup Disk" under the apple menu at the top left of the screen, my internal SSD doesn't show up - I just get a spinning wheel. This doesn't feel right. Do I need to do something to fix this?

Does anyone know what I've done wrong please?

Thank you.

See if the SSD is showing up in Disk Utility. If not, then most likely the SSD is defective, not actually compatible, or was not installed correctly. If it is appearing, then it may be incorrectly partitioned and formatted. It needs to be GUID and either Mac OS Extended or APFS, the latter being the preferred option with Monterey and later versions of macOS.

Thank you. The SSD does show up in Disk Utility. I've erased it, and I selected:

Name: Macintosh HD

APFS

GUID

When I tried to install after that, I got an error message saying something like "can't install on APFS because a firmware update is required"

So instead I went back to Mac OS Extended (Journalled) - then the installation begins ok, but halfway through it stops, the machine reboots itself, and I go back to the recovery screen (offering me the chance to repeat the installation).
