External SSD is very slow in opening files

I just got a Crucial External SSD with Catalina OS. The apps open so fast, however, files from folders take forever to open. What could go wrong? Please help

Welcome!

Hmmm, we have little to go on. Details are everything.

  • What model Crucial?
  • Have you confirmed that the external is set as a boot volume? Ways to start up your Mac - Apple Support (start while holding OPTION). If the SSD does not show in the resulting Startup Manager, the drive is not bootable.
  • Did you CLONE the old drive to the external or did you COPY it? They are very different. If copied, it is unlikely to be bootable.

There is a way to troubleshoot this that will be easier on all of us. If you want a data-driven evaluation in this setting where we can neither see nor touch your computer, please post an EtreCheck report. We can quickly and within the limitations of these forums help you determine what issues are at play without our playing a protracted game of "20 Questions" with you that could go on for days.

The free version will do nicely for this purpose, although the app is worthy of our financial support.

We can see hard data about drive performance, software issues and interferences, and RAM usage. Etrecheck is the development of a long-serving and trusted ASC contributor. EtreCheckPro version: 6.8.6 (68057)

Report Generated: 2024-10-29 04:56:26

Runtime: 5:27

Performance: Good

Problem Description:

I just got a Crucial External SSD (Model X6 Portable SSD) with Catalina Installed or copied to it and I opened my Mac with it as a startup disk.

The apps open so fast, files from folders (in Finder/Desktop) take forever to open.

What could go wrong?

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Malware - Malware Detected

Unsigned files - there are unsigned software installed that could be malicious and should be reviewed

Obsolete Hardware - this computer may be considered obsolete (late 2013)

Adobe Flash Player installed = Adobe Flash Player is installed on this computer. This is a security risk and no longer supported...

External SSD is very slow in opening files
