Why is my iPad Pro not charging from my MacBook Pro?

Using a MacBook Pro 16" 2021 in clamshell mode with an external 3rd party display. Using iPad Pro 12.9" M1 as a sidecar continuity monitor. I have the iPad attached to the Magic Keyboard case. I notice that the batter level is low and plug the iPad (keyboard's USB C) to the MacBook Pro's USB C. The battery still dropped although there was a lightening sign signify charging. I plugged the iPad directly (instead of going through the keyboard). Still the SoC did not go up. Why is this happening and what is the solution?

Connect the USB-C cable to the Mac computer's USB-C port first - and then connect the other end of the USB-C cable directly to the iPad. When connecting two host devices that support USB PD (Power Delivery), the sequence that you connect the devices can be important - as this determines the direction of power flow between devices.
