AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Test fails with "Unable to classify due to background noise" error.

Hearing test keeps stopping stating it is unable to classify due to background noise. The only noise is me breathing! I've tried four times now and can't get through one ear without the test stopping at 75% finished.

Update to my previous post (see below):

I tried the hearing test again on my iPhone 12 Pro using my over-ear aviation headset with gel ear seals covering the ears with the airpods pro - and it worked!

previous post:

Same problem with me - "Unable to Classify" because of background noise. I tried the hearing test on my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 18.1 more than 15 times, but always failed during the test for the left ear, the test canceled after about 60-80 %. I also tried on an iPhone 12 mini with iOS 18.1 and the hearing test worked 3 out of 6 times. I did the tests in a very quiet room, there was absolutely no noise. I took the data from the successful tests on the iPhone 12 mini and transferred them manually to the Health app on my iPhone 12 Pro so the AirPods can now use that audiogram for adjustments.

This is very disappointing as I too got these thinking I could use hearing assist. I have latest firmware 7b21 and still get unable to classify in soundproof room. Granted my left ear doesn’t work so well but right ear does. I complete test then I get unable to classify due to background noise, there is none! Have tried at least 5 or 6 times..

Exactly. When you contact apple support they act as if they are unaware of this issue and you are the only person who has had this experience. They then take you on a journey of academic exercises designed to prove that the problem is on your end, not a bug in their system. Before you know it you are circling the drain of apple **** until you are ready to give up and call it a loss.

I just received my AirPods Pro 2 yesterday 11/16/24 and was excited to try them. I have confirmed mild hearing loss thru doctor. I have iPhone 15 Pro with latest OS18.1 and I iPad 10th generation. Hearing test fails on both devices with Unable to Classify message....have tried at least 10 times. Firmware on pods is version 7B21, the latest.

I have done restarts, made sure OS is up to date. I have tried a variety of quiet areas including garage inside car, the closet, my basement....fail, fail fail, "unable to classify". Do I return, please Fix. Have read through the thread as well and tried suggestions. Help..want them to work

Took the test multiple times, including under the bed covers, to no avail. Every time received the same error message "unable to classify...". Putting tape over the mic didn't help either. The cynic in me sez that it looks like Apple rushed defective software to market to live up to the promised fall debut for the the hearing aid function. Better fix it fast!

Thanks for the tip - turning off Spatial Audio and noise cancellation - setting them to transparent listening. I was told I needed to clean the AirPods (doubtful, I bought them today), but I removed them from my ears and wiped them off. Was then able to run the test again - to what appeared to be the end of the left ear test (based on the completion circle) before again being told that it was unable to classify.

I have had no issue with this but as you are clearly not the only one dealing with this issue, I will take my hearing test again when I’m back in Amsterdam. I’m currently in a rural place where you hear the occasional rooster and the very soft white noise of far-away-traffic which clearly doesn't bother the airpods. Next week I’ll be in Amsterdam again and if I can find back this thread again, on the fifth floor, bad insulation and close to the center of the city with heavy traffic in front on my door, I’ll post my results.

I'm in the same Unable to Complete boat.

Rebooting? No help

Firmware ? 7B21 should be current. No help

iOS? 18.1.1 should be current, no help

Transparency mode? No help

All other modes? No hel\p

Quiet space? Oh yeah. No Help

Pretty glitchy thing here. My expectations for any level of accuracy or help using them as a hearing protection in a restaurant or wherever have diminished a good deal. The only thing I can say is that I didn't get the AirPods for this purpose and for the baseline stuff, they work nicely. This? No....

Same problem as everyone else here. 99 times out of 100 the left ear is successful but the right ear fails right at the end of the test. Have tried between 10 and 12 times. Room is completely quiet, even turn off the air-conditioning. I also had my wife try it But it fails for her too. Apple needs to fix this. I bought these AirPods specifically for this. Normally I hate Apple headphones. But the sound from these are exceptional.

As I posted earlier in this thread, I wear actual hearing aids and was able to successfully scan my clinically sampled audiogram (hearing test chart) and use it with my AirPods Pro 2 to adjust sound quality for my hearing abilities.

I had no illusions about using my AirPods as daily-wear hearing aids, but adding my audiogram did improve listening quality for me and I did try the AiPods out as temporary hearing aids.

If you're thinking of using your AirPods as all-day-long hearing aids, be prepared to charge them at least a couple times during the day. I found that leaving the Hearing Aid function on drains the batteries quickly.

In the three hours I used my AirPods as hearing aids, my battery drained nearly 50%.

They worked beautifully as temporary hearing aids and when I see my audiologist later this month for an updated hearing test, I'll scan it again with my iPhone and update it for my AirPods to use.

To access the AirPods Settings menu, you have to have the AirPods case open (not necessary to remove the buds).

I just tried mine again and I successfully got through the test and they are now working as hearing aids. I can hear sounds that I am assuming I should be hearing. This sounds similar to the hearing aids I demoed at Costco. I have money in my HSA for 2025 to get real hearing aids as I am under no illusions that AirPods Pro can replace real hearing aids. But as I think about wearing hearing aids, I have a lot of questions and concerns about getting the real hearing aids. Like I like to listen to music and to me, using AirPods to listen to music, the music sounds pretty good. I noticed with the hearing aid curve added to the AirPods makes them sound better, so that is good. The hearing aids I will be getting you can bluetooth to your phone for phone calls or listen to music, but while they work for conversations. So I can see me taking out the HA and putting the AirPods in when I want to listen to music. I also ride motorcycles and have bluetooth communicators in the helmet and there are speakers in the helmet. The problem with HA is that the sound is collected behind the ear so I will have to take them out when I ride the motorcycle. I might just get some ear plugs with speakers in them like NASCAR drivers wear that blocks the outside sound but allows you to listen easily. Then I have issues with wearing a winter hat and other inconveniences of them. But I guess there must be away around it as lots of people wear HA and have dealt with these issues before.
